Some later coverage contains a conflicting April 28 date in one sentence, despite labeling the return April 18. The contemporaneous account places the visit on April 18, so that is the date to use. ABC News’ timeline contains the discrepancy.
What was Catherine recovering from?
Catherine underwent planned abdominal surgery in January 2024. In a video message released March 22, she said post-operative testing had found cancer and that she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy. The announcement did not specify a cancer subtype, and no further private medical details should be inferred. ABC News Australia’s March 24 report quoted Kensington Palace saying the couple were touched by messages of support and grateful for understanding of their request for privacy.

When was Catherine expected to return to duties?
Kensington Palace said Catherine would return to royal duties once her medical team cleared her. That made her schedule dependent on her recovery and treatment, rather than on a fixed public date. Her first public appearance after the announcement came at the King’s Birthday Parade in June 2024, but a single appearance did not signal an immediate return to a full schedule. How did Catherine describe her recovery?
In a statement released June 14, Catherine said she was making progress while treatment continued: “I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days.” She added, “My treatment is ongoing and will be for a few more months.”

She said she was doing some work from home when well enough and hoped to take part in a few public engagements over the summer, while continuing to take time to heal. The update described a gradual, day-by-day recovery—not a return to her previous workload. ITV News reproduced her June statement.
William’s return was separate from King Charles’s
William’s April 18 engagements should not be confused with King Charles’s return to public-facing duties. The Royal Family announced on April 26 that Charles would resume public-facing duties after treatment and recuperation. That was a separate announcement about the King, not the date or announcement of William’s return. The Royal Family’s April 26 announcement concerns Charles.

What happened after the April return?
Catherine announced in September 2024 that she had completed chemotherapy. In January 2025, she said her cancer was in remission and that she remained focused on recovery.
