Prince Harry and Prince William both attended the August 2024 memorial service for their uncle by marriage, Lord Robert Fellowes, in Norfolk. Witnesses and the vicar said they did not see the brothers speak; one attendee said they kept their distance. Those observations do not establish that the princes never spoke during the event.
What was reported at Lord Fellowes’s memorial service?
The service took place at St. Mary’s Church in Snettisham, Norfolk, on August 28, 2024. LBC reported, citing a family friend, that both princes attended. Another attendee told the outlet that they arrived discreetly and were noticed only near the end of the service; LBC also reported that they sat apart at the back of the church. These are accounts attributed to sources by the outlet, not statements from either prince. LBC’s report was published the following day and updated February 10, 2026.
The church warden, speaking to the BBC in comments relayed by Fox News, called it a family occasion celebrating Fellowes’s life and said both princes were able to attend. Fox News reported the warden’s remarks on August 30, 2024.
Did Harry and William speak to each other?
The vicar who led the service, Reverend Dan Tansey, told the Daily Mail, as paraphrased by The Daily Beast, that he did not see the brothers speak. Tansey also described family members and friends speaking with them at the reception. An attendee quoted by LBC said the princes were keeping their distance. Neither account proves that they had no contact at any point: they describe what particular observers saw or perceived. The Daily Beast’s account was published August 30, 2024.

No direct comment from Harry or William about their interaction at the service appears in the cited coverage. Accordingly, “were not seen speaking” is more precise than saying they definitively avoided one another throughout the event or that one snubbed the other.
Who was Lord Robert Fellowes?
Fellowes was married to Lady Jane Fellowes, a sister of Princess Diana, making him the princes’ uncle by marriage. He died on July 29, 2024, aged 82. He also served as Queen Elizabeth II’s private secretary from 1990 to 1999, according to the contemporaneous reports from LBC and The Daily Beast.

What does the report establish—and what does it not?
- Attendance: Reports attributed to a family friend and the church warden said both princes attended the memorial service.
- Observed interaction: The vicar said he did not see them speak, and an attendee described them as keeping their distance.
- Motive: The coverage does not establish why they behaved as observers described, or that their broader relationship caused it. Reports referenced prior discord, but that context does not explain this particular family gathering.
Vanity Fair’s August 30, 2024, coverage connected the story to the brothers’ discord and Harry’s memoir Spare; that background is not independent evidence of what happened at the service. Vanity Fair’s report provides that context.
