The change followed his announcement that he would stop using his titles and honours; the formal removal of his style and title came later, through Letters Patent.
What happened, and when
| Date | Development |
|---|---|
| 17 October 2025 | Andrew said he would no longer use his title or honours, following discussions with the King and family. He said he stood by his earlier decision to step back from public life and denied the accusations against him. |
| 30 October 2025 | Buckingham Palace said the King had initiated a formal process concerning Andrew’s remaining style, titles and honours. It also announced that formal notice had been served to surrender the Royal Lodge lease and that Andrew would move to alternative private accommodation. |
| 3 November 2025 | Letters Patent were dated under the Great Seal, removing Andrew Mountbatten Windsor’s entitlement to the style and title of Royal Highness and the titular dignity of Prince. The House of Commons Library says notice appeared in the London Gazette on 5 November. |
| Earlier in 2026 | The Associated Press reported that Andrew had moved to the King’s Sandringham Estate. |
Andrew’s announcement on 17 October was a decision not to use his titles and honours. It was not itself the formal legal act that removed his entitlement to the style and title. The Palace announced the process on 30 October; the subsequent Letters Patent, dated 3 November, formalized the change. Andrew’s statement, the Palace announcement and the House of Commons Library briefing document the sequence.
What changed about his titles and name
In his 17 October statement, Andrew said: “I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me.” On 3 November, Letters Patent declared that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor could no longer hold the style or title of Royal Highness or the titular dignity of Prince. The Commons Library explains that the Royal Highness style is conferred by Letters Patent under the royal prerogative and can be removed through the same kind of instrument. The Commons Library briefing sets out that legal context.
The official Palace announcement and the Letters Patent spell the name “Andrew Mountbatten Windsor,” without a hyphen. The Commons Library notes that the Palace later said it would use “Mountbatten-Windsor” with a hyphen going forward. Its briefing also explains that a 1960 declaration by Queen Elizabeth II established Mountbatten-Windsor as a surname for descendants not entitled to the relevant styles.

Why he left Royal Lodge
The Palace said Andrew’s lease had provided legal protection to remain at Royal Lodge, and that formal notice had been served to surrender it. The Palace described the move as necessary despite Andrew’s denials of the accusations against him. It also said that the King and Queen’s thoughts and sympathies remained with victims and survivors of abuse. The Palace statement acknowledged Andrew’s continued denials; his own statement said he “vigorously” denied the accusations. Those allegations should not be treated as findings of fact.
The Palace initially described the destination only as alternative private accommodation. In June 2026, the Associated Press reported that Andrew had moved earlier that year to the Sandringham Estate. That later report updates the Palace’s October announcement that he would move. The AP report also summarized findings from a National Audit Office review of royal properties.

What is known about Royal Lodge and its finances
According to the Associated Press’s account of the lease and National Audit Office review, Royal Lodge is a 30-room mansion on an estate that includes eight cottages. Andrew was allowed to sublet three of the cottages and received income from doing so. The amount was not included in the audit report, AP reported, so the income cannot be quantified from that account. It does not establish his net profit.
ITV reported on 11 November 2025 that Andrew paid £1 million for the lease and a further £7.5 million for refurbishments completed in 2005, attributing those figures to the lease agreement and the National Audit Office report. ITV also reported at the time that the King would privately fund Andrew’s future accommodation at Sandringham and that Andrew would receive an appropriate private provision. These were reported arrangements in November 2025, not a definitive account of current payment terms. ITV’s report provides those contemporaneous details; AP’s 2026 report covers the later move and the audit findings.
