Priest (2011) is a vampire-hunting action film starring Paul Bettany, with Karl Urban as the antagonist Black Hat. Its premise and stylized combat invite a comparison with Blade, but “Blade replacement” was not an official production description, and the available evidence does not establish that Priest has an undisputed cult-classic following. What it does offer is a post-apocalyptic story adapted from Hyung Min-woo’s graphic novel series.

What is Priest about?

Set after a centuries-long war between humans and vampires, the film follows a warrior priest whose niece is kidnapped by a vampire hive. When he learns what has happened, he breaks his vow of peace and sets out to find her. Sony classifies the movie as sci-fi and action; Tubi also categorizes it as horror.

Scott Stewart directed the film, and Cory Goodman wrote the screenplay. Paul Bettany plays Priest, Karl Urban plays Black Hat, Cam Gigandet plays Hicks, Maggie Q plays Priestess, and Lily Collins plays Lucy. Sony lists the film as PG-13.

Why is it compared with Blade?

Both films center on fighting vampires, and Priest pairs that premise with a stylized action setting. That makes “Blade replacement” a useful shorthand for the kind of vampire-action movie it is—not a verified account of the studio’s intent or a production claim. The comparison also has limits: Priest is set in a post-apocalyptic world shaped by a long human-vampire war.

Is Priest based on a graphic novel?

Yes. Sony describes the movie as based on a graphic novel, and the AFI Catalog identifies its source as Hyung Min-woo’s Priest graphic novel series. Sony Japan credits Min-woo as the original-work author.

Is Priest a cult classic?

The label appears in a 2026 Collider headline, but that alone does not establish a sustained cult following or a broad critical reassessment. It is more accurate to describe Priest as a vampire-action adaptation that some later coverage has called a cult classic, rather than present the label as settled consensus.

Where can you watch or buy Priest?

Sony’s U.S. film page lists digital, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. Sony Japan also documents Blu-ray, DVD, and Blu-ray 3D editions. These catalogs confirm formats, not current retailer stock or prices, and editions can differ by market.

Tubi has a title page for the film, but it currently marks the content unavailable. Streaming availability can vary by location and change over time, so check the service’s listing for your region before relying on it as a viewing option.

What to check before choosing a disc

  • Format: Confirm whether you want DVD, Blu-ray, or a 3D Blu-ray edition and that your player supports it.
  • Region and listing: Check the edition’s region compatibility and the seller’s current availability; the distributor’s catalog does not establish a current price or stock.
  • Extras: Bonus material is edition-specific. Sony Japan lists some Blu-ray editions with an audio commentary featuring director Scott Stewart, writer Cory Goodman, Paul Bettany, and Maggie Q, plus featurettes and deleted scenes. Those Japanese edition details should not be assumed for releases in other territories.
