These 15 archival photos trace the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from early floats and Broadway crowds to famous balloons, performers and an airborne mishap. The images span 1929 to 1996; captions and credits are based on the Associated Press archive, and each photo’s reuse requires separate rights clearance.
How the parade became a balloon-filled tradition
The parade began in 1924 as the Macy’s Christmas Parade, with store employees, floats and live animals from the Central Park Zoo. Its route from Harlem to Macy’s Herald Square stretched more than five miles, according to Macy’s and HISTORY. Macy’s account of the parade’s history and HISTORY’s account of the first parade differ on the exact distance, so “more than five miles” is the defensible description.
Macy’s says four large, air-filled balloons carried on sticks debuted in 1927, with helium added the following year. The New York City Municipal Archives describes the first balloons as animal-shaped and calls Felix the Cat, introduced in 1931, the first recognizable cartoon character; the sources characterize that early Felix balloon differently. Balloons released after the parade beginning in 1928 were redesigned with valves after bursting that year. The release tradition ended after a balloon collided with a plane over Queens in 1932. The parade paused from 1941 through 1943 during World War II-era material rationing and a moratorium on large public gatherings, according to Macy’s.
The municipal archive’s balloon history helps explain why the parade’s visual identity changed over time: the photos below show not a simple march toward bigger spectacles, but a selection of very different scenes and moments.

Together, the images show a parade that could be understood through more than its balloons: floats, performers, celebrity riders, crowds and the occasional mishap all have a place in its history. But a curated set of 15 pictures is not a measurement of how large, popular or visually elaborate the parade became from decade to decade.

Where to view the archive and what to know about image rights
The AP Photos gallery contains the captions behind these selections and links to AP Images. A published gallery or visible online image does not by itself grant permission to reproduce a photograph; obtain image-specific permission and use the rights holder’s requested credit.
Macy’s Parade Archives also displays historic balloon and float images, but its archive notice says it has no records for those images and makes no representation about rights held by photographers or people shown. It places use at the user’s own risk, so the archive should not be treated as proof of reuse rights.
