Pride flags represent communities, identities, and shared histories; their colors and symbols do not have one universal meaning. This curated selection covers 23 commonly recognized flags, but it is not a definitive list: new designs emerge, some identities have multiple flag versions, and some communities do not have one universally accepted design. A flag can express belonging or support, but it does not determine how any individual identifies.

How to read a pride flag

Start with the community or identity a flag is associated with, then consider the particular design. Color explanations are tied to specific flags and sources, not a universal code that applies across all designs. The University of California, Santa Barbara’s Resource Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity describes its glossary as non-exhaustive; the International LGBTQ+ Travel Association Foundation and PFLAG San Francisco also note that some flags have variants or no single official design.

The familiar rainbow flag is one well-known symbol, not an inventory of every LGBTQ+ identity. The flags below are a selection, not a standard set of exactly 23.

Rainbow and inclusive pride flags

1. Original eight-stripe rainbow flag

Artist Gilbert Baker created the original eight-stripe flag for San Francisco’s 1978 Pride Parade. The Government of Canada lists its stripes as pink, red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, and purple. The Victoria and Albert Museum reproduces Baker’s meanings: pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic, indigo for serenity, and violet for spirit. These meanings belong to Baker’s original design; they are not a general color key for other pride flags.

2. Six-stripe rainbow flag

Pink and turquoise were later removed, leaving the familiar red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple design. It is widely recognized as a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and community, but it does not represent every identity-specific flag or settle what a particular person identifies as.

3. Progress Pride flag

Daniel Quasar’s 2018 design adds a chevron to the six-stripe rainbow. The Government of Canada explains that the chevron’s black and brown stripes represent Black, Indigenous, and people of color, while its white, pink, and light blue stripes are associated with the transgender flag. The arrow points forward to signify that progress remains unfinished. Quasar told the V&A that the design asks viewers to reflect on whom the original flag represents and on the community’s current needs.

4. Intersex-inclusive Progress Pride redesign

Some versions of the Progress Pride design incorporate the intersex flag’s purple circle within a yellow field in the chevron. This adapts the design to include intersex people; it is distinct from the original Progress Pride flag. The Government of Canada describes the intersex flag’s yellow and purple as deliberately avoiding gender stereotypes and gender-related symbols.

Flags associated with sexual orientations

5. Lesbian flag

The lesbian flag has multiple designs and variants. UCSB’s glossary credits Emily Gwen with a 2018 design. The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association Foundation notes there is no official consensus or designated lesbian flag, so a particular version should not be presented as the only valid one.

6. Bisexual flag

The UCSB glossary credits Michael Page’s team with the 1998 bisexual flag. In its explanation, pink represents same-gender attraction, blue represents different-gender attraction, and purple represents attraction to more than one gender. These are meanings attributed to this flag, not universal meanings for those colors.

7. Pansexual flag

The pansexual flag is associated with pansexual people. The sources cited here do not establish one authoritative color-by-color interpretation, so its colors should not be assigned a definitive meaning without a source for the particular design.

8. Asexual flag

The UCSB glossary credits AVEN with the 2010 asexual flag. Its explanation assigns black to asexuality, gray to the gray area between sexual and asexual, white to sexuality, and purple to community. These interpretations are specific to this flag.

9. Demisexual flag

The demisexual flag is associated with demisexual people, a group included in UCSB’s pride-flag glossary. The consulted source does not provide a color-by-color explanation here, so its stripes should not be given a universal interpretation.

10. Demiromantic flag

The demiromantic flag is associated with demiromantic people and appears in UCSB’s glossary. As with other designs, explanations of its colors should be tied to a reliable source for that version.

Flags associated with gender identities

11. Transgender flag

UCSB credits Monica Helms with the 1999 transgender flag. Its white, pink, and light blue stripes are also incorporated into the Progress Pride chevron. This flag is associated with transgender people; it does not imply that every transgender person uses or prefers it.

12. Nonbinary flag

UCSB credits Kye Rowan with the 2014 nonbinary flag. Its glossary explains yellow as identities outside the gender binary, white as multiple genders, purple as a mixture of male and female genders, and black as agender people. These explanations describe this design rather than a universal meaning for yellow, white, purple, or black.

13. Genderqueer flag

The genderqueer flag appears in UCSB’s glossary as a design associated with genderqueer people. People may use other flags or no flag, and interpretations should be attached to the specific design rather than generalized to all gender identities.

14. Genderfluid flag

The genderfluid flag is another design listed by UCSB. It is associated with genderfluid people; the glossary’s inclusion does not make it an exhaustive or mandatory symbol for everyone with that identity.

15. Agender flag

An agender flag is associated with agender people. UCSB’s explanation of the nonbinary flag also identifies its black stripe with agender people, but that does not make every agender flag the same design or establish a universal color code.

16. Intersex flag

Morgan Carpenter created the intersex flag in 2013: a purple circle on a golden-yellow field. The Government of Canada says the colors and circle were chosen to avoid gender stereotypes and gender-related symbols. The circle is part of this flag’s deliberate design, not a generic symbol used across pride flags.

17. Two-Spirit flag designs

Two-Spirit flags are associated with Two-Spirit people, an identity and term rooted in Indigenous contexts. PFLAG San Francisco notes that designs vary and no single version is universally official. Do not treat a design as a substitute for the distinct cultural meanings of the term.

19. Aromantic flag

An aromantic flag is associated with aromantic people. A flag can signal community or pride, but it cannot tell a reader how an individual experiences romantic attraction or chooses to identify.

20. Achillean flag

Achillean flags are associated with men and masculine-aligned people who experience attraction to men. There may be multiple designs; name the specific version when explaining its colors or symbols.

21. Sapphic flag

Sapphic flags are associated with women and feminine-aligned people who experience attraction to women. The label and designs can encompass varied experiences; no single flag should be assumed to represent everyone who uses the term.

22. Bear flag

The bear flag is associated with the bear community, a subculture within LGBTQ+ communities. As with other community designs, its use is not a test of identity or membership.

23. Ally flag

An ally flag is used by some people to express support for LGBTQ+ people. The Trevor Project’s allyship guide lists a flag, pronoun button, or poster as possible visible cues of allyship. A symbol is only one cue; it does not by itself establish how someone acts or whether a space is safe.

How to choose or interpret a flag responsibly

  • Identify the version. Some identities have more than one design, and redesigns can add or alter symbols.
  • Check who explains it. Prefer an explanation from the creator, the represented community, or a reliable institutional resource.
  • Keep meanings specific. A color’s meaning on one flag does not automatically carry over to another.
  • Allow personal choice. People may use a flag, choose a different version, or not use one at all.
  • Respect cultural context. In particular, do not flatten Two-Spirit identity into a generic flag category.
