Prada and Axiom Space unveiled the flight design of the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) on October 16, 2024, in Milan. The suit was originally associated with Artemis III, then planned as NASA’s first crewed lunar landing. NASA’s architecture has since changed: as of August 2026, Artemis III is targeted for 2027 as a crewed low-Earth-orbit demonstration, while Artemis IV is the first planned Artemis mission to land astronauts on the Moon, targeted for early 2028.
Prada did not independently make a luxury spacesuit for NASA. It is collaborating with Axiom Space on the suit’s exterior design, materials, product development, sewing, and manufacturing approach. Axiom remains responsible for the aerospace spacesuit system developed for NASA.
What was revealed in Milan?
The 2024 presentation at the 75th International Astronautical Congress showed the AxEMU’s flight-design exterior. It followed an earlier prototype reveal on March 15, 2023. The prototype and the later flight-design presentation should not be treated as the same milestone: the 2023 version was an early development article, while the 2024 event presented the exterior configuration intended for the operational suit.

What is the AxEMU?
AxEMU stands for Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit. It is intended for astronauts carrying out extravehicular activity, including surface excursions on the Moon. A spacesuit is effectively a small spacecraft worn by a person: it must maintain pressure, provide life support and communications, regulate temperature, enable movement, and protect its wearer from a hostile environment.
On the lunar surface, that environment includes vacuum, extreme temperature changes, abrasive dust, micrometeoroids, uneven terrain, reduced gravity, and demanding physical work such as climbing, kneeling, bending, and handling tools. Axiom says the flight-design exterior is intended to withstand the thermal extremes and micrometeoroid environment near the lunar South Pole.

What did Prada contribute?
Prada joined Axiom in a formal partnership announced on October 4, 2023. The fashion company brought expertise in materials research, product development, garment construction, sewing processes, and manufacturing. Its role also includes work on the suit’s external layer and the engineering needed to make that layer function as part of a pressurized, articulated spacesuit.
That contribution matters because a spacesuit is not only a life-support machine. Its outer architecture must accommodate movement, joints, protective layers, thermal demands, and the practical realities of working in lunar terrain. Garment-engineering knowledge can therefore complement aerospace engineering.

But the public announcements do not provide a complete component-by-component division of responsibility. The accurate description is that Prada helped develop the AxEMU’s outer architecture and production approach, while Axiom leads the aerospace spacesuit system for NASA. Is it really a “Prada spacesuit”?
That phrase is understandable but incomplete. Prada’s design language is visible in the suit’s presentation, yet the AxEMU is not a consumer fashion item or a standalone Prada product. It is a NASA-contracted aerospace system being developed by Axiom Space under NASA’s commercial spacesuit-services approach.
NASA selected Axiom in 2022 to provide the lunar surface spacesuit and moonwalking system originally associated with Artemis III. The initial task order had a base value of $228.5 million; that figure was the task order’s base value, not necessarily the total eventual cost of the broader program.
NASA’s commercial-provider model moves some future spacesuit development and service responsibility to industry while NASA defines exploration requirements and remains the customer. Prada is an industrial and design partner within that arrangement—not the private owner or sole developer of the suit.
What happened to Artemis III?
The original association was straightforward. In 2024, NASA and the companies presented AxEMU in the context of Artemis III, which was then planned as the first crewed Artemis mission to land astronauts on the Moon.

NASA revised the Artemis architecture in 2026. Its current plan identifies:
- Artemis III, targeted for 2027: a crewed low-Earth-orbit demonstration mission involving critical systems and planned rendezvous and docking work with commercial lunar-lander systems. NASA is evaluating ways to test Axiom’s suit and its interfaces during this phase.
- Artemis IV, targeted for early 2028: the first planned Artemis crewed lunar-surface mission. NASA says its astronauts will wear Axiom’s advanced spacesuit for lunar surface operations.
That means it is no longer accurate to say without qualification that Artemis III astronauts will wear the Prada-Axiom suit during the first Artemis Moon landing. The AxEMU was designed in connection with the earlier Artemis III plan, but its current lunar-surface role is primarily associated with Artemis IV.
NASA’s current mission pages are the best references for the changing schedule: Artemis III, preliminary Artemis III plans, and Artemis IV.

The 2026 cooling-garment reveal
On June 7, 2026, Prada and Axiom announced a separate component: the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG). This is an undergarment worn inside the AxEMU, not the same thing as the outer flight-design reveal from October 2024.
The LCVG circulates cooling water through tubes to remove body heat during strenuous activity. It is essential functional hardware for a pressurized suit, where an astronaut cannot simply remove layers or rely on ordinary ventilation. Prada’s announcement refers to the garment’s use in future lunar missions, including the Artemis IV context now associated with the first planned Artemis landing.

What the reveal does—and does not—prove
Showing the flight design establishes the configuration the partners presented publicly. It does not by itself prove that the entire system has completed every certification, qualification, mission-integration review, or flight-readiness milestone.
NASA’s Office of Inspector General has identified schedule and management risks in the acquisition of next-generation spacesuit services. Those findings are risk assessments, not proof of a confirmed delay. Likewise, a NASA target date is a planning target rather than an immutable launch guarantee. The exact extent of AxEMU testing during Artemis III remains subject to mission planning and technical development.
The central story is therefore larger than a fashion collaboration. Prada’s contribution addresses the suit as a sophisticated garment and manufactured product, while Axiom’s system must operate as protective life-support equipment in one of the most demanding environments humans have attempted to explore.
