Powerless by Lauren Roberts is a young-adult romantic fantasy and the first book in the publisher-described Powerless trilogy. It follows Paedyn Gray, an Ordinary without supernatural abilities, who hides in a society that favors the powerful by pretending to be a Psychic. After she saves a prince, she is drawn into the Purging Trials—a competition designed around the very powers she lacks.
What is Powerless about?
In Ilya, the ruling class of Elites has abilities associated with surviving the Plague, while Ordinaries have none. The king has decreed that Ordinaries be banished. Paedyn is an Ordinary trying to stay alive: she relies on sharp observation and presents herself as a Psychic, one of the gifted, rather than reveal what she is.
When Paedyn saves one of Ilya’s princes, she is forced into the Purging Trials. The contest tests Elite abilities, making her concealed identity a practical danger as well as a personal one. The publisher frames the book around forbidden romance, competition, and discrimination enforced by law. That premise establishes the central setup, but not how the trials or relationships end.
Where does it fit in the series?
Simon & Schuster identifies Powerless as the first book in the Powerless trilogy and describes Fearless as the trilogy’s conclusion. The publisher’s complete collection contains five titles: Powerless, Powerful, Reckless, Fearless, and Fearful. Those five collected titles should not be confused with five numbered installments in the core trilogy.

Who is it aimed at?
Simon & Schuster’s paperback metadata gives a suggested audience of grade 9 and up and ages 14–99. These are publisher audience labels, not a detailed suitability assessment. The publisher synopsis and metadata do not provide a full content-warning list, so readers who need specific warnings should consult a dedicated content guide before deciding.

What does the publisher say about the book’s reach?
Simon & Schuster’s series page places a “nearly 2 million copies in print” figure alongside Powerless, without stating the figure’s reporting year. Separately, the publisher author biography says Lauren Roberts’s books have sold more than 5 million copies worldwide; that is an author-level figure, not a sales total for Powerless.
