Start with the insight your episode should uncover, tailor prompts to the guest’s actual work, and treat your question list as a flexible map—not a script you must finish.
Start with the story this episode should uncover
Before writing questions, finish this sentence: “By the end of this conversation, listeners should understand…” The answer might be how a creator made a difficult pivot, why a particular project took shape, or what changed after an experiment failed. That focus helps you choose questions that serve the episode rather than simply collect biographical facts.
Then identify the guest’s specific experience that can reveal the story. Look for a particular project, choice, turning point, or example in their work. A question about that detail is more likely to produce a useful account than a broad request to describe a career.
Turn the episode idea into an inquiry
- Episode idea: a creator changed their production process. Ask what was not working, what they tried, and what happened when they changed it.
- Episode idea: a project found an audience. Ask which early response surprised them and how it affected what they made next.
- Episode idea: a creator built a distinctive style. Ask about a specific piece of work where they first recognized that style developing.
These are starting points, not assumptions about what happened. Research the guest and adapt each prompt to evidence in their work and the premise of your show.

Write open-ended questions that leave room for the guest’s answer
Questions beginning with “what,” “why,” or “how” often invite an explanation or reflection. A yes-or-no question can be useful for a quick confirmation, but it usually needs a follow-up if the episode depends on the story behind the answer.
Also check whether your wording supplies the guest’s feelings or conclusion. Spotify for Creators’ guide quotes Hannah Berner, host of Berning in Hell, describing how she moved from assuming a guest felt alone to asking how an experience made the guest feel about themself. The change leaves the guest free to give an answer the host did not anticipate.

| Leading or limiting prompt | More open alternative | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| “That launch must have been terrifying, right?” | “What was going through your mind as the launch approached?” | The guest can name their own response instead of confirming yours. |
| “You always knew you wanted to be a creator, didn’t you?” | “When did making this kind of work first become a serious possibility for you?” | The question allows for uncertainty, a gradual change, or a different beginning. |
| “Was the new process better?” | “What changed when you started using the new process?” | The guest can describe the result and its limits, not just choose yes or no. |
A useful edit is to ask yourself: could the guest reasonably disagree with the premise of my question? If so, remove the assumption and ask what happened, what they thought, or how they made the decision.
Build a flexible interview arc
This sequence is an adaptable outline, not a required formula. Reorder it to fit the guest and episode. You do not need to ask every question, and the prompts work best when you customize their details before recording.

- Context: “What were you trying to make or change when this work began?”
- Origin: “Can you take us back to the moment this idea first became real for you?”
- Specific story: “What happened the first time you tried that approach?”
- Decision or turning point: “What changed your mind, and what did you do next?”
- Process: “How do you make that work in practice, step by step?”
- Reflection: “What do you understand now that you did not understand at the beginning?”
- Useful close: “What is one question you wish people would ask you about this work?”
Use follow-ups to make broad answers concrete. If a guest says a project “changed everything,” ask what changed first. If they describe a decision, ask what alternatives they considered or what happened immediately afterward. These prompts help listeners follow the story without forcing it into a predetermined conclusion.
Prepare for the guest, not just the topic
Before the interview, review the guest’s relevant work and note the details that connect to your episode’s central idea. Prepare prompts around those details rather than relying only on generic biography questions. Your research is there to help you ask precisely, not to demonstrate that you have read everything.

A practical preparation checklist
- Write down the single story or insight the episode should uncover.
- Choose a few specific moments, decisions, or examples from the guest’s work that could illuminate it.
- Draft open prompts about those details, avoiding a presumed emotion or outcome.
- Keep possible follow-ups nearby: “What happened next?”, “What made that difficult?”, and “Can you give an example?”
- Mark questions that are essential to the episode and those you can drop if the conversation takes a better direction.
Riverside advises hosts not to treat a prepared list as a word-for-word script: questions do not have to be asked in order, and a prompt can be skipped if the guest has already answered it. Keep your outline visible, but attend to the answer in front of you.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Listen closely and follow the useful thread
Good interviewing is not just asking well-written prompts; it is noticing what the guest actually says. Listen for a surprising detail, a decision that needs explaining, or a moment where the guest’s account becomes especially specific. Follow that thread with a question that fits the answer, even if it means leaving your planned order.

When an answer is vague, ask for an example or a sequence of events. When it is already clear and complete, move on rather than asking a follow-up merely because it appears on your list. If the guest has answered a later question early, cross it off.
How many questions should you prepare?
There is no universal question count established for a podcast interview. The American Psychological Association describes podcast interviews as usually longer than television and radio interviews, often lasting half an hour to an hour; that is a qualitative description, not a required duration or a measured average. Use the planned episode length to leave room for answers and follow-ups instead of trying to hit a question quota.
Keep interview questions separate from distribution choices
Question design shapes the conversation; publishing and distribution are separate decisions. If you already have recorded video and want it to play continuously on a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. This is for uploaded video, not a live camera interview.
StreamNeo keeps the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Start a StreamNeo free day.
