Pocket Casts made its Web Player and Mac and Windows desktop apps free to use without a subscription on March 11, 2025. You can stream an episode in a browser without creating an account. A free account adds playback syncing, queue management, and saved subscriptions and preferences; Pocket Casts Plus and Patron remain optional paid tiers for additional features.
What changed?
Before the change, Pocket Casts required a paid subscription for web and desktop access. The March 2025 announcement removed that subscription requirement for its Web Player and Mac and Windows apps. Pocket Casts’ mobile apps were already available as free apps, so the main change was making listening on a computer accessible without paying.
The Web Player remains available at pocketcasts.com/play. “Free” here means basic player access; it does not mean every Pocket Casts feature, or every podcast, is free.
Three levels of access
- Without an account: Open the Web Player, find an available show or episode, and stream it. Pocket Casts says basic listening does not require an account or subscription.
- With a free account: Add playback-progress syncing across devices, queue management, and saved subscriptions and preferences.
- With Plus or Patron: Pay for additional organization, customization, storage, wearable and other premium features. A free account is not equivalent to Plus.
To try it, visit the official Web Player, choose an episode, and press play. If the player asks you to sign in, the prompt may relate to syncing or other personalized features. For basic playback, check that you are on the official player and try again with browser extensions that block scripts or media temporarily disabled. The announcement establishes streaming; it does not establish that anonymous users can download episodes for offline listening.

What is still paid?
Pocket Casts’ current plans page continues to list Plus and Patron. Its listed Plus features include folders, Up Next Shuffle, bookmarks, wearable apps, exclusive content, storage, themes, and icons. Patron includes Plus benefits and lists early access to features, 100GB of cloud storage, a profile badge, and special app icons.
Features and plan details can change, and the plans page does not provide a reliable current price in its crawlable text. Check the plans page or checkout flow for the price and billing terms available in your country rather than relying on older launch coverage.

Why make the Web Player free?
Pocket Casts framed the decision as support for podcasting’s open, RSS-based origins. The company argued that listeners should be able to access podcasts without being confined to a single platform, and emphasized organic discovery rather than AI-powered recommendations. Those are Pocket Casts’ stated principles and positioning, not proof that every podcast is unrestricted or that the wider market works the same way.

RSS lets many shows distribute episodes through feeds that podcast apps can read. But a player does not control whether a publisher keeps a feed online, makes episodes subscriber-only, or offers a program exclusively through a particular service.

How it fits alongside other podcast services
Pocket Casts is a dedicated podcast player with free browser listening and optional paid tools for organizing and customizing a library. That may suit listeners who want a podcast-focused app and access across phone, desktop, and browser.
- Apple Podcasts: Offers a web destination for podcasts and may be convenient for listeners already using Apple’s services and devices.
- Spotify: Combines podcasts with music and a broader recommendation-driven platform, which can appeal to people who want both in one place.
- YouTube Music: Connects podcasts with YouTube’s wider music and video ecosystem, a useful fit for listeners who prioritize video podcasts or that discovery environment.
These services differ in ecosystem and workflow; there is no universal winner. Pocket Casts’ free web access lowers the barrier to trying a dedicated player, but does not establish that it has a larger catalog, better recommendations, or greater privacy than its competitors.

Who is likely to benefit?
The change is especially useful if you listen at a work or school computer, switch between a phone and desktop, or want to sample an episode without installing an app or registering first. It can also make sharing a show easier: a recipient can try the Web Player without first subscribing to Pocket Casts, although the episode still needs to be available through its feed.
Listeners who mainly want music and podcasts together, depend on algorithmic recommendations, or make video podcasts central to their routine may prefer another service. Android users looking specifically for a free, open-source app can also consider AntennaPod; iPhone and iPad users looking for a dedicated player can compare Overcast. Those are different product choices, not like-for-like substitutes for Pocket Casts’ browser player.

Limits to keep in mind
- Free player access is not free access to every show. A feed can be broken, removed, private, subscriber-only, or limited by its publisher. Paid feeds may require separate access or a special feed URL.
- Free playback does not remove podcast ads. Ads included in an episode or inserted by a publisher or ad network may still play.
- Plus remains paid. The web-player change removed the listening paywall, not the premium tier or all feature limits.
- Unavailable episodes are not necessarily Pocket Casts paywalls. Check whether the show has a working feed or requires a private or paid subscription feed.
Pocket Casts’ announcement made basic web and desktop streaming free, while leaving premium tools available for listeners who want them. That is a meaningful change for access—not a promise that every episode, feature, or listening experience is free.
