Plex’s redesigned Android and iOS apps began rolling out on March 31, 2025. The overhaul brought personal libraries, Plex’s streaming catalog, Watchlist, discovery, and Live TV into a more unified mobile interface. It was a substantial redesign, not a new 2026 release—and it arrived just before separate changes to Plex’s remote-playback rules took effect.
What changed in Plex’s mobile app?
The redesign applies to Plex’s apps for iPhone, iPad, and Android phones and tablets. It did not replace Plex as a service, and it did not mean that television, desktop, web, or other Plex clients received the same interface at the same time. Plex described the goal as bringing personal media and its own on-demand content, discovery, and social features together. Plex’s announcement and release thread document the mobile rollout.

In the redesigned Home screen, the header provides search, casting, Watchlist, and the profile menu. The lower navigation reaches the app’s main areas, while individual sections can have horizontally scrollable tabs such as Recommended, Browse, Collections, and Categories. Exact labels and placement can vary by platform and app version; Plex’s mobile navigation guide explains the current layout.
It was a rollout, not a one-day switch
Plex published its preview on March 30, 2025, and began the Android and iOS release on March 31. Availability was staged, so users did not necessarily see the update on the same day. Follow-up releases through April added or repaired features involving downloads, library controls, navigation, playback, and stability. The launch build was numbered 2025.10.1, but that is a historical version number—not a current 2026 recommendation. Check your app store for the current build and Plex’s release thread for version history.

The follow-up work matters when judging reports about the redesign. Plex’s release notes list fixes for issues including library-loading crashes and performance, as well as changes to downloads and playback. Users also reported problems such as slow navigation, missing thumbnails, or frustration with prominent Discovery and Live TV surfaces. Those are reports from particular users and versions, not proof that every installation had the same problem or that each issue persists today.
What you need for personal libraries and downloads
If you use Plex only for its own free ad-supported streaming content, you do not need to run a personal Plex Media Server for that use. To access your own server’s media, however, the server must be online, the account must have access to it, and you should use a current mobile app. Plex’s documentation lists Plex Media Server version 1.41.2 or later for full support of the redesigned app’s server-based functionality. For personal-server downloads, Plex says premium access is generally required: typically an active Plex Pass or qualifying Plex Home access, depending on the account and server-admin arrangement. A current app and compatible server are also needed. In practice, open the title or season, use its download control, then manage or play saved items in the Downloads area. If the control is absent, check the account entitlement, server version, sign-in, server reachability, and available device storage before assuming the redesign removed the feature.
- Update Plex from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- If you use a personal server, update Plex Media Server to version 1.41.2 or later.
- Sign into the correct Plex account in the app and make sure that account can access the server.
- Open a movie, episode, or season and check for its download option; use the Downloads area to find saved media.

Did Plex make remote playback a paid feature?
Not because of the redesign itself—but the timing made the two changes easy to confuse. Plex’s separate policy changes took effect on April 29, 2025. From then on, remote streaming of personal media required Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass under Plex’s published rules. Remote Watch Pass is for remote streaming, not the wider set of Plex Pass benefits. Check the current terms for your account and household in Plex’s feature guide and its 2025 policy announcement.
This is distinct from the redesign, mobile downloads, and local-network playback. If remote playback stopped working after the policy change, first check whether the account or server administrator has the required entitlement; it may not be an app defect. Plex also changed how older one-time mobile activation purchases were treated. The exact effect depends on the purchase and account arrangement, so check Plex’s current support information rather than assuming a past activation covers every later feature.

Do not rely on an old subscription price when deciding whether to pay. Plex’s 2025 announcement advertised a $119.99 USD lifetime Plex Pass price before the April 29 increase; that is historical, not a verified current price. It is a better fit if you use Plex on a phone or tablet regularly, want Watchlist and search close at hand, browse both your own media and Plex’s catalog, or use offline downloads. Later updates also improved library browsing and playback features compared with the first rollout.

It may be a poor fit if you want a stripped-down player focused only on a personal server, dislike Plex’s discovery or Live TV surfaces, depend on older server software, or need offline access but do not have the required premium entitlement. The new mobile app also says little about the experience on your TV: Plex clients are not necessarily in feature or interface parity across platforms.
For anyone undecided, update the mobile app and server, then try the new navigation with your own libraries before changing your setup. The overhaul made Plex’s mobile app broader and more integrated, not automatically simpler. If you prefer a different client or browser playback, check its compatibility with your server and media features separately rather than assuming it will behave exactly like Plex’s app.

- The update is not in the store: Check the App Store or Google Play manually and allow for a staged release. Plex warned that the initial rollout would take several days. Avoid uninstalling before checking whether you need locally stored downloads.
- Your libraries are missing: Confirm the server is online, the app is signed into the right account, that account has server access, and the server is up to date. Refresh the library view after checking those basics.
- The app is slow or crashes: Update both the app and server and restart the app. Plex’s later releases addressed stability and performance issues, but a specific failure can have other causes.
- Downloads are missing or unavailable: Check premium eligibility, account identity, server compatibility, available storage, and whether the download completed.
- Remote playback fails: Check the post-April 29, 2025 remote-streaming requirements as well as server availability and account permissions; the subscription rule may explain the change.
