Plex raised the price of a new Lifetime Plex Pass from $249.99 to $749.99 at 12:01 a.m. UTC on July 1, 2026. Existing lifetime holders keep their benefits, and Plex says monthly and annual Plex Pass prices were unchanged. For new buyers, the one-time option now takes roughly nine years of monthly payments or nearly 11 years of annual payments to break even.
What changed, and when?
Plex announced the change on May 19, 2026. The new lifetime price took effect on July 1 at 12:01 a.m. UTC and is already the standard price. Plex’s announcement is available at Plex’s pricing announcement.

The lifetime increase is $500, or 200 percent. The new price is three times the previous one. Plex lists U.S.-dollar example prices; taxes, currency conversion and regional pricing can change the amount shown at checkout.
Who is affected?
Existing lifetime subscribers
Plex says current Lifetime Plex Pass holders retain their benefits and perks. They do not need to renew or buy another plan.

Monthly and annual subscribers
Plex said this announcement did not change the cited monthly or annual prices. Subscribers who later switch plans should check the account billing instructions that apply to their payment method.
New buyers and app-store customers
Anyone buying a lifetime pass after the effective time pays the new price. Plex directs subscribers who pay through Apple, Google or another app store to follow separate upgrade instructions; direct Plex billing is managed from the account’s Subscriptions & Payments area. Why did Plex raise it?
Plex says the price reflects the ongoing value of maintaining, developing and supporting its software. It says recurring subscriptions help sustain that work and that it considered removing the lifetime option before deciding to keep it.

That makes recurring revenue strategically important, but Plex has not explicitly said it is trying to force every lifetime customer onto subscriptions. The practical effect is clear: retaining lifetime access while making monthly, annual and multi-year billing more attractive for many users.
The “10 years” claim needs context
The increase is not the first lifetime-price change in Plex’s entire history. Ars Technica reports that Plex launched the lifetime pass at about $75 in 2012, raised it to $120 in 2014, kept it at that level for years, increased it to $249.99 in 2025 and then raised it again to $749.99 in 2026. The “first hike in 10 years” wording therefore describes a long stable period, not an unbroken history without any price increases. See Ars Technica’s historical account.
What Plex Pass unlocks
Plex Pass is primarily a feature subscription for people running or using a Plex Media Server, not a paid movie library. Depending on supported devices, server configuration and hardware, the benefits include:

- It does not add a premium Netflix-style catalog of movies and television shows.
- It does not remove advertisements from Plex’s free on-demand or Live TV services.
- It does not include a server, storage, electricity, networking equipment, tuner or antenna.
- It does not guarantee that every future Plex app, device integration or feature will remain unchanged forever.

These are simple comparisons assuming uninterrupted use and no price changes. They exclude taxes, promotions, discounts, the time value of money and the possibility that Plex changes features or that you stop using the service. Future subscription increases could shorten the period; discounted renewals could lengthen it.

How the alternatives compare
Monthly Plex Pass
Choose monthly billing to test premium features, use Plex seasonally or keep the smallest upfront commitment. It is the least risky option if you are unsure Plex will remain your platform.
Annual Plex Pass
Annual billing lowers the effective cost versus monthly payments without requiring a $749.99 commitment. It suits users expecting to run Plex for one to several years who prefer predictable yearly renewal.
Reported five-year Plex Pass
Ars Technica reported a five-year Plex Pass priced at $249.99 after the lifetime increase. That works out to about $49.998 per year or $4.17 per month. The cited official Plex pages did not clearly document whether this term renews, expires, or can be upgraded, so verify availability and all checkout terms before paying. Remote Watch Pass
Remote Watch Pass is narrower than Plex Pass: it is intended for remote streaming of personal content from a Plex server to which you have access. It does not provide the broader bundle of downloads, DVR, hardware transcoding, Plexamp features and advanced server tools. If remote viewing is your only requirement, compare this option before buying Plex Pass; its price is not established in the cited material.
Who should consider the $749.99 lifetime plan?
It can make sense when
- You are highly confident Plex will remain central to your setup for roughly nine to 11 years.
- You regularly use several Plex Pass-only features, such as hardware transcoding, downloads, DVR and Plexamp.
- You value avoiding recurring billing and want protection from possible future subscription increases.
- You accept paying the full amount upfront without the flexibility of stopping a monthly or annual renewal.
It is usually a poor fit when
- You are still testing Plex or may stop using it within a few years.
- You mainly watch a friend’s server remotely.
- You do not need transcoding, downloads, DVR or advanced administration.
- You are considering another media-server platform or are concerned about long-term changes to Plex’s apps and policies.
Alternatives outside Plex
Readers willing to trade Plex’s established ecosystem and convenience for a different self-hosted software model can investigate Jellyfin or Emby. Their current feature coverage, device support, setup requirements and pricing should be checked directly before switching.
Bottom line for new buyers
Existing lifetime owners have no action to take. For everyone else, the $749.99 lifetime pass is now a long-horizon purchase: it only beats today’s annual price after about 10.7 years. Monthly or annual Plex Pass is the safer default, while the reported $249.99 five-year plan could be the most compelling middle ground if its terms and availability suit you. Buy lifetime only when you expect a decade-plus of Plex use and will actively use the full feature set.
