Plex redesigned its Android and iOS apps in a rollout that began March 31, 2025, then made a new Roku experience generally available on September 16, 2025. The changes bring navigation and personal libraries into clearer view, but Plex’s claims of faster loading and scrolling are company descriptions—not results from independent speed tests. The redesign arrived in stages, and the cited announcements do not establish the current status of every TV platform.
What the Plex redesign is—and isn’t
Plex framed the overhaul as a way to bring personal media, on-demand entertainment, and discovery together in a more unified interface. It is not one simultaneous redesign across every device: mobile and Roku have distinct announcements and release stages, while Plex’s September 2025 Roku notice said it had no dates to share for other TV platforms.
The available evidence documents Plex’s stated changes and rollout history, not controlled comparisons of app speed. “Faster” should therefore be read as Plex’s description of its goals and preview improvements, not a verified performance result.
What changed in the mobile apps
Plex announced Android and iOS releases 2025.10.1 on March 31, 2025, with a staged rollout expected to take roughly a week. The new layout made key destinations easier to reach and gave personal media a more distinct place.

At launch, Plex said Plex Media Server 1.41.2 or later was required to fully support the new app. That is a dated launch requirement, not confirmation of the minimum server version required today. Plex’s mobile announcement and release history records later changes as well, but its 2025 notes do not establish current app versions in 2026.
What Plex said it improved for mobile
As the mobile experience left preview, Plex listed changes intended to improve everyday use. These included improved load times and scrolling, fast and alphabetical library scrolling, long-press context menus, portrait mode, casting—including AirPlay for personal media—picture-in-picture, and playback controls. Plex described the loading and scrolling as improved; the cited material does not provide independent measurements or test conditions to quantify the difference. Plex’s mobile preview and rollout post outlines those changes.

How the Roku rollout differs
Plex said its updated Roku experience became available to everyone on September 16, 2025. The launch announcement highlighted a top navigation bar, quick Watchlist access, and an account menu. It also said user feedback had prompted the return of Music and Photos to the Plex app on Roku, a change Plex had announced in July 2025. Plex’s Roku availability announcement describes the public release.
A separate Roku navigation preview described by Plex on November 5, 2025, should not be mistaken for that September release. In the preview, menus appeared over content, which Plex said avoided reloading content when navigating within a library. Plex said it would use feedback to refine the experience and hoped to move the preview to the production channel before the end of that year. That stated hope does not establish that the preview subsequently became a general release. Plex’s November preview post identifies it as a preview.

Why music and photos changed place
Plex’s product direction evolved. In a 2024 company blog post, Plex said music playback was used by 2.5% of its users and photos were accessed by 0.2% of users monthly. It cited those company-reported figures as context for focusing the main app on movies, shows, Live TV, and community while moving music and photos into companion apps. They are Plex’s own usage numbers, not independent measurements; later Roku messaging said feedback brought Music and Photos back to that app. Plex’s 2024 explanation and its later Roku announcement show how the arrangement changed.

The release history is clearest for mobile and Roku. Plex’s September 2025 notice did not give release dates for other TV platforms, and that dated statement does not establish their status in September 2026. Check Plex’s current platform documentation or the app listing for the specific device before assuming its interface matches Roku’s. Plex lists its big-screen app platforms in its supported smart TV and big-screen app documentation.
