The Plex message “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again” is a generic playback failure, not a diagnosis. It can indicate a client-app problem, an incompatible file, subtitles or audio that require transcoding, a failed Plex transcoder, storage permissions, or a local or remote network connection problem.
The fastest way to narrow it down is to test another title, try the same title in Plex Web, disable subtitles, check the Plex Dashboard playback mode, and compare local playback with remote playback.
Try these checks first
- Restart Plex Media Server and the playback device.
- Play a different movie or episode on the same client.
- Open the failing title at app.plex.tv or in the Plex desktop app.
- Disable subtitles and try again.
- Select a different audio track, preferably stereo or AAC if available.
- Try a lower playback-quality setting.
- Update both Plex Media Server and the client app.
- Start playback and inspect the active session in the Plex Dashboard.
These tests separate a one-file problem from a client, server, transcoding, or network problem. Restarting may clear temporary state, but it will not repair a damaged file, incorrect permissions, an unsupported codec, or broken remote access.

- Direct Play: Plex sends the original file to the client without conversion.
- Direct Stream: Plex repackages or changes part of the stream while retaining compatible media streams.
- Transcode: Plex converts the video, audio, or subtitles into a format the client can use.
Also note whether video, audio, or subtitles are being transcoded, along with the requested bitrate. Direct Play usually places the least load on the server, but it requires the client to support the file container, codecs, resolution, bitrate, audio format, and subtitle behavior. Transcoding improves compatibility but depends on server CPU or GPU capacity, storage performance, permissions, temporary disk space, and a working transcoder.
Do not permanently force Direct Play as a universal fix. It can fail when the client cannot decode the original file or when the network cannot sustain its bitrate. Plex documents these playback modes in its playback settings documentation.
What the test results mean
| Result | Likely area to investigate |
|---|---|
| Every title fails on one device | Client app, device, account, network path, or secure-connection compatibility |
| One title fails everywhere | Damaged media, codec, permissions, storage, metadata, or a problematic stream |
| One title fails only on one device | Client decoder, audio, subtitles, resolution, bitrate, or app state |
| Local playback works but remote playback fails | Remote Access, NAT, firewall, VPN, upload speed, or account requirements |
| Plex Web works but a TV app fails | Client compatibility, device limitations, cache, or client settings |
| Direct Play works but Transcode fails | Server resources, hardware transcoding, permissions, temporary storage, or the transcoder |
| Subtitles trigger the failure | Subtitle format or subtitle burn-in |
These are diagnostic directions rather than guaranteed diagnoses. Plex app capabilities vary by platform and device.

Play the file outside Plex with VLC or another local media player. If it fails there too, the source file may be damaged. If possible, copy it temporarily to local storage and retry; an intermittently disconnected NAS share or mounted drive can be indexed successfully but fail when Plex reads the file.
Also check that the Plex service account can read the file and its containing folders. Compare the failing file with a working one: container, video codec, audio codec, resolution, bitrate, and subtitle tracks. Re-scan the library after correcting storage or permissions. If the file is corrupt, replace or remux it. Renaming the file alone does not repair an unreadable media stream.

Plex’s supported media formats guide explains why particular combinations may require Direct Stream or transcoding.
Check subtitles and audio tracks
Subtitles can unexpectedly change a Direct Play session into a demanding video transcode. Image-based subtitles and some text formats may need to be burned into the picture, especially when the client cannot render them directly.
Recommended Free Tools
- Start the title with subtitles disabled.
- Try a simple SRT subtitle.
- Try another audio track.
- Check the Dashboard to see whether subtitle or video transcoding begins.
If the title works without subtitles, the subtitle format or burn-in path is implicated. This matters particularly with high-bitrate 4K HDR media, where subtitle burn-in can overwhelm a server.
Audio can cause the same symptom. A client may support the video but not the selected DTS, EAC3, TrueHD, PCM, or other multichannel track. Try stereo or AAC audio if available, and check the audio settings on the TV, receiver, or soundbar. Support varies by client and home-theater equipment.
If only one TV, phone, or streaming device fails
- Fully close Plex and restart the device.
- Sign out and sign in again.
- Update Plex through the device’s official app store.
- Clear the app cache where the platform supports it.
- Clear app data or reinstall Plex if the problem continues.
Clearing app data can remove your login state and local preferences. Reinstallation is a reasonable client-side test, not a guaranteed solution. If Plex Web and another device play normally, focus on this client rather than replacing the server.

On Android TV, check the Plex setting for H264 Maximum Level. Plex recommends leaving it at the default level of 4.1; choosing a higher level can create playback problems. This is an Android TV-specific setting, not a universal Plex fix. See Plex’s Android TV settings guide.
If Plex Web works but the app does not
This usually points toward the app’s decoder, device limitations, stored app state, or a client-specific setting. Browsers, smart-TV apps, streaming sticks, and mobile clients do not necessarily support the same containers, codecs, audio formats, resolutions, or subtitle types.
Use Plex Web as a control test, then update or reinstall the affected app. If the app fails only with particular files, compare those files’ audio, video, and subtitle streams with a title that works on the same device.
If local playback works but remote playback fails
First confirm that the same title plays locally. Then open Settings > Server > Remote Access and verify that Remote Access is genuinely available. A server can appear online while still failing to deliver a remote stream.
- Check manual port forwarding to the server’s local IP. Plex’s standard internal destination port is 32400.
- Look for double NAT, carrier-grade NAT, or a changing server IP address.
- Temporarily test without a VPN, proxy, firewall rule, or intrusion-prevention feature that may block Plex traffic.
- Check the server’s upload speed and lower the remote quality.
- Try a different remote network and see whether other remote users fail.
Lowering remote quality can help when upload bandwidth is insufficient, but it will not repair a broken route or incompatible stream. Plex’s current documentation also notes that remote video playback may require a Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass depending on the account, region, and server-owner arrangement. Check the current remote-access requirements before purchasing anything.

If transcoding fails
Transcoding failures can result from insufficient CPU or GPU capacity, broken hardware acceleration, a full temporary disk, incorrect transcoder-directory permissions, NAS limitations, a damaged source, subtitle burn-in, or a demanding 4K HDR conversion.
- Confirm in the Dashboard that transcoding is occurring.
- Temporarily disable hardware transcoding and retry using software transcoding.
- If software transcoding works, investigate GPU drivers, device permissions, container passthrough, or hardware-transcoding configuration.
- If both modes fail, check free disk space, transcoder-directory permissions, storage mounts, and server logs.
- Try a lower-resolution or lower-bitrate file.
Disabling hardware transcoding is a diagnostic test, not necessarily a good permanent configuration. Software transcoding may overload the CPU. Do not buy a GPU or a new server until the Dashboard and logs show that transcoding is actually the bottleneck.

Connection security can matter when the server appears in Plex but playback fails, local connections are unreliable, or one client supports secure connections differently from another.

In Plex Web, open Settings > Server > Network > Secure connections. For compatibility testing, Plex recommends Preferred rather than Required when a client may not support secure connections. Do not broadly set secure connections to Disabled: that reduces protection and is not a general solution.

Some routers, modems, and DNS providers block the private plex.direct addresses Plex uses. Plex documents router-specific DNS-rebinding exceptions. For dnsmasq, its example is:
rebind-domain-ok=/plex.direct/
For pfSense’s ISC DNS Resolver, Plex documents:
server:
private-domain: "plex.direct"
These changes are advanced and router-specific. Apply only the narrow documented exception; do not weaken DNS-rebinding protection globally. See Plex’s secure connections documentation.
Check the server, VPN, firewall, and storage
Confirm that Plex Media Server is running, signed in, and current. A VPN, proxy, firewall, DNS change, or intrusion-prevention system may allow library browsing while blocking the media stream. Also check that the library storage is mounted, the Plex account can read it, and the server has free space for temporary transcoding files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf every local client fails, prioritize the server process, storage, permissions, transcoder directory, recent server updates, and network changes before changing individual client settings. Plex’s connection troubleshooting guide covers server sign-in, VPN and proxy checks, secure connections, and related connection failures.
Collect useful logs before contacting Plex
Record the Plex Media Server version, client app version, playback device, whether the test was local or remote, the exact title, the time of failure, the media codecs, and the Dashboard mode. Reproduce the failure once, then collect server and client logs immediately afterward.
For Plex desktop apps, documented log locations include:
Windows: %LOCALAPPDATA%PlexLogs
macOS: ~/Library/Logs/Plex/
Linux Flatpak: $HOME/.var/app/tv.plex.PlexDesktop/data/plex/Logs
Linux Snap: $HOME/snap/plex-desktop/common/Logs
On Android TV, Plex provides a Network Logging option that sends app messages to a logging service for 20 minutes. Enable it only while actively reproducing the problem and collecting a support report. See the Android TV documentation and Plex’s desktop log guide.
Quick diagnosis table
| Symptom | Next action |
|---|---|
| All videos fail everywhere | Check server status, storage, permissions, network changes, and logs. |
| One file fails on every client | Test it outside Plex; inspect or replace the file and its streams. |
| Only subtitles cause failure | Disable them, try SRT, and check for subtitle burn-in. |
| Only one app fails | Update, restart, clear cache, sign in again, or reinstall. |
| Only remote playback fails | Check Remote Access, port forwarding, NAT, VPN, firewall, upload speed, and account requirements. |
| Only transcoded sessions fail | Test software transcoding, then inspect hardware, permissions, disk space, and server resources. |
| Only high-bitrate 4K media fails | Check Direct Play support, bandwidth, HDR conversion, subtitles, and transcoding capacity. |
The Bottom Line
The error message does not identify one universal Plex bug. Use another title, Plex Web, subtitle and audio tests, and the Dashboard’s Direct Play/Direct Stream/Transcode information to isolate the failing layer before changing hardware or converting your library.
