Its product family consists of Work (formerly Projects), Wiki, and Plane AI; a Desk product is listed as coming soon. You can use Plane Cloud or deploy one of its self-hosted editions, including an AGPL-3.0 Community Edition.
What is Plane?
Plane organizes delivery work and the information around it in a single system. A team can create work items, plan cycles and modules, maintain project documentation, triage incoming requests, and view progress without maintaining separate task and wiki systems.
Plane’s official positioning is “an AI-native project management platform.” In practical terms, that means the product combines three areas: Work for planning and execution, Wiki for pages and documentation, and Plane AI for AI-assisted workflows. The Projects name is being replaced by Work in the current product family.
How Plane structures project work
Work items
Work items support descriptions, attachments, priorities, labels, and custom states. Custom states let a team model its own workflow rather than forcing every project into a fixed to-do, doing, and done sequence.

Cycles, modules, initiatives, and epics
Cycles provide time-bounded planning. Modules group related delivery areas, while initiatives and epics connect larger outcomes to the work needed to deliver them. This gives Plane a hierarchy that can extend beyond a flat task board.
Views and progress reporting
The same work can be viewed as a Board, Spreadsheet, List, or Gantt chart. Dashboards add reporting, including velocity and burndown tracking. The appropriate view depends on the question: boards show flow, spreadsheets support dense editing, lists favor scanning, and Gantt charts expose schedule relationships.
Intake, triage, workflows, and approvals
Plane includes intake and triage for requests that have not yet been committed to a delivery plan. Workflow and approval controls help teams define how work moves from request to execution and how decisions are recorded.
Documentation and navigation
Wiki pages keep specifications, decisions, and operating documentation alongside delivery work. Keyboard-first Command-K navigation is designed for users who prefer searching and moving through the workspace without repeatedly opening menus.

Yes, but the answer depends on the edition. Plane Community Edition is released under the AGPL-3.0 open-source license. That provides source-level control and permits self-hosting, subject to the obligations of the AGPL.

Plane also sells hosted and higher-governance offerings. Commercial and Airgapped editions are aimed at organizations that need additional governance, compliance, security controls, privacy features, enterprise identity, support, service-level commitments, or operation without an ordinary internet connection. “Open source” therefore describes the Community Edition; it does not mean every Plane capability is included in that edition.
Can you self-host Plane?
Yes. Plane documents three self-hosted editions: Community, Commercial, and Airgapped. Docker and Kubernetes are supported deployment methods.
Community Edition
Community Edition is the AGPL-3.0 option for teams that want to run Plane themselves and accept responsibility for infrastructure, upgrades, backups, security hardening, and operations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommercial Edition
Commercial Edition is for organizations that require paid governance and enterprise capabilities beyond the community distribution. The commercial model is also where Plane describes support and SLA-oriented commitments.
Airgapped Edition
Airgapped Edition targets offline, isolated, or classified-network environments. It is the relevant path when the deployment cannot depend on a normal connection to Plane’s hosted services or public internet.

Private AI connections
Self-hosted deployments can use local or private AI connections. Plane’s self-hosting documentation describes OpenAI-compatible endpoints and Ollama, allowing an organization to keep model traffic within infrastructure it controls when its security policy requires that arrangement.
AWS procurement
Plane has an official AWS Marketplace listing. The documented procurement advantage is that billing can run through an organization’s existing AWS invoice, which may simplify vendor onboarding and internal chargeback.

Plane Cloud is the hosted edition. Plane’s pricing page presents per-seat plans and paid feature tiers, but a specific price is not established here; treat the live pricing page as authoritative for current amounts, billing intervals, and included limits.
Community Edition is the open-source route without a Plane software subscription, but self-hosting is not cost-free in practice. You still provide compute, storage, databases, backups, monitoring, administration, and upgrades. Commercial and Airgapped editions add paid software and enterprise services for organizations that need their additional controls.
A useful cost comparison is therefore total ownership rather than license price alone:

Which integrations and importers does Plane support?
Direct integrations
Plane’s documented integrations include GitHub, GitLab, Slack, and Sentry. These cover source-control activity, team communication, and error-monitoring context.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Migration importers
Importers are available for Jira, Asana, Linear, ClickUp, and Monday. An importer can reduce the mechanical work of moving records, but it does not automatically reproduce every workflow, permission model, automation, dashboard, or custom field from the old system. Plan a mapping exercise before committing to a migration date.
Build-your-own integrations
Plane exposes a REST API, webhooks, OAuth apps, and typed Node.js and Python SDKs. It also provides a native MCP server. Together, these interfaces support custom integrations and AI agents that can read or act on Plane data under the access controls you design.
Does Plane have AI features?
Yes. Plane presents AI as a first-class product area rather than an add-on label: Plane AI sits alongside Work and Wiki in the unified workspace. The homepage describes AI-powered workflows, and the platform’s API, webhooks, SDKs, and native MCP server provide extension points for custom agents.
The practical implication is broader than a single chatbot. A team can evaluate Plane AI for built-in assistance, then use the open interfaces to connect an internal agent or an OpenAI-compatible or Ollama endpoint where policy permits. The exact models, limits, and task coverage can change by edition and release, so verify those details in the current product documentation before purchasing or designing an automation.

Plane compared with Jira, Linear, Trello, and Asana
There is no universal winner; the choice turns on deployment control, process depth, documentation needs, and how much AI or integration work your team wants to own. Plane’s distinctive combination is an open-source Community Edition, self-hosted commercial and air-gapped options, an integrated Wiki, and an explicit AI and agent layer.
| Tool | Typical reason to shortlist it | How Plane differs |
|---|---|---|
| Plane | Teams wanting one workspace for work, docs, and AI, with Cloud or self-hosting choices. | Offers AGPL Community self-hosting, Commercial and Airgapped editions, cycles and modules, multiple views, and API/MCP extensibility. |
| Jira | Organizations already standardized on a mature issue-tracking and enterprise workflow ecosystem. | Plane is the more direct candidate when source availability, private deployment, an integrated Wiki, or an air-gapped option is a priority. Plane provides a Jira importer for migration. |
| Linear | Teams seeking a polished, hosted product centered on fast product-development workflows. | Plane adds self-hosted editions and an AGPL option, while also providing a Wiki and broader deployment control. Plane provides a Linear importer. |
| Trello | Small teams that primarily need a simple visual board. | Plane supplies deeper planning structures such as cycles, modules, initiatives, epics, Gantt views, dashboards, and approvals, which may be unnecessary for a lightweight board-only process. |
| Asana | Teams managing cross-functional work with a hosted work-management service. | Plane is the stronger fit when self-hosting, source control, private AI connectivity, or an integrated technical Wiki matters. Plane provides an Asana importer. |
For a fair evaluation, compare the tools on the same workflow: capture an intake request, triage it, schedule it in a cycle, attach documentation, obtain an approval, link a source or incident, and report progress. Then check which system preserves your permissions, history, automations, and reporting during migration.
Who is Plane a good fit for?
- Engineering and product teams that want issues, planning, specifications, and delivery reporting together.
- Organizations with data-residency or network restrictions that need Docker, Kubernetes, private AI endpoints, or an air-gapped deployment.
- Open-source adopters that want AGPL source access and control over where the application runs.
- Platform and automation teams that need REST, webhooks, OAuth, SDKs, or MCP to connect internal systems and agents.
- Teams migrating from another tracker whose current system is covered by Plane’s Jira, Asana, Linear, ClickUp, or Monday importers.
When Plane may not be the best choice
- A very small team that only needs a basic shared board may not use Plane’s cycles, modules, documentation, reporting, or deployment options.
- An organization that does not want to operate software should favor Plane Cloud over self-hosting, or compare it with a hosted-only alternative.
- A regulated buyer that needs a particular compliance attestation, identity provider, retention control, or support SLA should confirm that requirement in the relevant Commercial or Airgapped plan rather than assuming Community Edition includes it.
- A migration that depends on highly customized automations or permissions requires a proof-of-concept; an importer transfers supported data, not necessarily every behavior of the source platform.
A practical Plane evaluation checklist
- Choose the operating model. Decide between Plane Cloud, Community self-hosting, Commercial self-hosting, and Airgapped deployment.
- Model one real project. Recreate work-item states, labels, priorities, cycles, modules, approvals, and documentation structure.
- Test the daily views. Have users complete the same work in Board, List, Spreadsheet, and Gantt views and verify that each view exposes the information they need.
- Connect the delivery toolchain. Test the applicable GitHub, GitLab, Slack, or Sentry integration and confirm how links, notifications, and permissions behave.
- Run a migration sample. Import a representative slice from Jira, Asana, Linear, ClickUp, or Monday, then compare history, owners, attachments, custom fields, and workflow states.
- Review extension and AI controls. Validate API tokens, OAuth boundaries, webhook handling, SDK access, MCP permissions, and the approved AI endpoint or model policy.
- Calculate total cost. Include per-seat subscriptions where applicable, infrastructure, backups, administration, support, and the engineering time required to maintain a self-hosted deployment.
- Define exit and recovery procedures. Confirm export, backup, restore, upgrade, and incident-response procedures before making Plane the system of record.
What the published adoption figures mean
Plane’s open-source page reports more than 58,000 GitHub stars, more than 2,000,000 Docker pulls, and more than 200 contributors, in the page’s 2025 publication context. These are company-published traction figures, not independently audited adoption statistics, and they should be read as signals of public activity rather than proof of fit for a particular organization.
Bottom line: is Plane worth considering?
Plane is worth a serious evaluation if you want project execution, documentation, and AI workflows in one product and you value deployment choice. Community Edition gives technically capable teams an AGPL-licensed self-hosting path; Plane Cloud reduces operational work; Commercial and Airgapped editions address stronger governance, privacy, and offline requirements. The main decision is not whether Plane has enough basic task features—it does—but whether its edition, operating model, migration path, and governance controls match the way your team must run projects.
