Where Is Rex Heuermann Now? What Happens After His Guilty Plea

As of September 30, 2026, Rex A. Heuermann is serving life without parole in New York after pleading guilty to seven murders on April 8, 2026, and admitting in court that he killed Karen Vergata, an eighth woman whose death was not charged in that plea. He was sentenced on June 17, 2026, to three consecutive life sentences plus 100 years, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Where is Rex Heuermann now?

Heuermann is in New York state custody under a life-without-parole sentence. A publicly searchable Department of Corrections and Community Supervision report is an aggregate facility report rather than a name-level locator, so it does not establish the prison where he is currently housed.

“Life without parole” means he has no ordinary parole-release date. His next phase is incarceration administered by New York corrections officials, subject to normal custody decisions such as transfers.

Did Rex Heuermann go to trial?

No. The criminal case was resolved by a guilty plea before a jury trial. On April 8, 2026, he pleaded guilty to seven charged murder counts and acknowledged killing Karen Vergata. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office treated Vergata as an additional admitted victim, not as one of the seven murders charged in that plea announcement.

Women covered by the plea and admission

Victim How the case was resolved
Melissa Barthelemy Charged murder resolved by guilty plea
Maureen Brainard-Barnes Charged murder resolved by guilty plea
Amber Costello Charged murder resolved by guilty plea
Sandra Costilla Charged murder resolved by guilty plea
Valerie Mack Charged murder resolved by guilty plea
Jessica Taylor Charged murder resolved by guilty plea
Megan Waterman Charged murder resolved by guilty plea
Karen Vergata Admitted killing; not one of the seven charged murders in the plea announcement

The seven charged cases accumulated through several indictments. Vergata’s killing was acknowledged in court even though prosecutors did not include it as an eighth murder count in the plea announcement.

What sentence did Heuermann receive?

Judge Timothy Mazzei imposed life without parole on June 17, 2026. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office described the aggregate punishment for the eight women as three consecutive life sentences plus 100 years. The Associated Press timeline also records the June sentencing and the absence of any possibility of parole.

At sentencing, Mazzei called Heuermann “a despicable man, if you are a man at all,” as quoted by the Associated Press. The sentence ends the ordinary trial-stage question of guilt in the seven charged murders; any later court activity would concern issues such as an appeal or post-conviction relief rather than a scheduled murder trial.

What happens next?

Incarceration and possible transfer

He remains under New York corrections administration. Prison placement, security classification and any transfer are administrative matters, and the public material cited for this case does not identify a confirmed current facility.

Appeals or post-conviction litigation

A guilty plea and sentence can still generate court filings, including an appeal or a post-conviction motion, if Heuermann or his lawyers pursue one. The cited announcements do not identify a future hearing or a filed appeal that would change his current status.

Further investigative work

The case may continue to produce reporting about additional forensic review, possible links to other unsolved deaths or investigative records. As of September 30, 2026, the cited authorities have not announced additional charges or a scheduled proceeding beyond the completed plea and sentencing.

Why the Gilgo Beach investigation matters to the timeline

Police began finding human remains near Gilgo Beach in 2010 while searching for a missing woman, according to the Associated Press timeline. Suffolk County created a new task force in January 2022. Investigators later used phone-location and DNA evidence before arresting Heuermann in July 2023.

Those earlier discoveries explain why the case expanded over time: prosecutors added victims in stages rather than presenting all of the eventual allegations at the initial arrest. The 2026 plea and sentence establish the eight-woman scope described above, while questions about other deaths remain separate unless prosecutors file new charges.
