The safest approach is to watch direct prequels and sequels in story order, treat The Good Dinosaur, Brave, and WALL-E as broad setting anchors, and use release order for films with no established fictional date. First-time viewers should choose release order.
There is no official, studio-approved chronological timeline for every Pixar feature. The most accurate way to watch Pixar chronologically is a hybrid: use the story order for direct prequels, sequels, and franchise entries; use broad setting clues only for films with clearly historical or futuristic premises; and keep release order for stand-alone films whose fictional dates Pixar has not established.
For a first-time viewer, release order is still the best choice because it shows how Pixar’s animation, storytelling, and sequel-making developed. For a rewatch, the chronological approach below gives you the meaningful continuity changes without presenting the fan-created Pixar Theory as fact.
Pixar movies in the best-supported chronological order
The following is a practical hybrid rather than a claim that every film shares one confirmed universe. The order is strongest inside each franchise block. The placement of The Good Dinosaur, Brave, and WALL-E uses their explicit broad settings. The remaining stand-alone films are kept in release order because their fictional dates are not firmly established.
1. The Good Dinosaur
Confidence: medium for its setting; low for its place in a shared Pixar universe. Pixar’s story premise imagines an alternate Earth where the asteroid misses the planet and dinosaurs survive. That makes it the clearest prehistoric starting point, but it is an alternate-history premise rather than evidence that the film shares the same literal Earth history as Pixar’s other stories.
2. Brave
Confidence: medium. Brave is rooted in ancient Highland legends, clans, a kingdom, and a pre-modern Scottish setting. It reasonably belongs near the beginning of an interpretive historical order, although the film does not provide a precise calendar year.
3. Watch the confirmed franchise stories in internal story order
These are the entries for which chronology is not merely an Easter egg theory. Watch each block as a continuous sequence:

- Toy Story (1995)
- Toy Story 2 (1999)
- Toy Story 3 (2010)
- Toy Story 4 (2019)
- Toy Story 5 (2026)
Toy Story 5 follows Toy Story 4 in direct franchise order. The Walt Disney Company gives it a June 19, 2026 theatrical release date and describes a continuation involving Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bonnie, and a tablet device called Lilypad.
- Monsters University (2013)
- Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Monsters University is the prequel, so it belongs before Monsters, Inc. in story chronology even though it was released 12 years later.

- Finding Nemo (2003)
- Finding Dory (2016)
Finding Dory follows Finding Nemo as the direct sequel.
- Cars (2006)
- Cars 2 (2011)
- Cars 3 (2017)
The Cars films should remain together in release and story order.
- The Incredibles (2004)
- Incredibles 2 (2018)
Incredibles 2 is a direct continuation of The Incredibles, so do not split the two films apart for a Pixar-wide theory timeline.
- Inside Out (2015)
- Inside Out 2 (2024)
Watch the original Inside Out before Inside Out 2.
4. Use release order for the unplaced stand-alone films
These films do not have a studio-confirmed position relative to the other Pixar stories. The sensible fallback is their theatrical release order:
- A Bug’s Life (1998)
- Ratatouille (2007)
- Up (2009)
- Coco (2017)
- Onward (2020)
- Soul (2020)
- Luca (2021)
- Turning Red (2022)
- Lightyear (2022)
- Elemental (2023)
- Elio (2025)
- Hoppers (2026)
Luca is often treated as a mid-century period story, but the current source set does not establish an exact year that would justify placing it precisely among the other films. Turning Red is a modern human-world story, but its exact position in a Pixar-wide chronology is not needed for a defensible watch order. Keep both with the stand-alone films rather than assigning them invented dates.
5. Finish with WALL-E if you are prioritizing setting
Confidence: high for the film’s own future setting; low for a shared Pixar timeline. Pixar describes WALL-E as taking place after the robot has spent 700 years cleaning an abandoned Earth while humans live aboard the Axiom. It is therefore the clearest far-future anchor and can be saved for the end of an interpretive setting-based marathon. That does not prove that every other Pixar film occurs before it in one canon; it only establishes WALL-E’s own future premise.

A concise hybrid itinerary
If you want one usable plan rather than separate rules, follow this order while remembering that only the internal franchise sequences and the broad setting anchors are strongly supported:
- The Good Dinosaur
- Brave
- The Toy Story block: Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, Toy Story 4, Toy Story 5
- The Monsters block: Monsters University, then Monsters, Inc.
- The Finding block: Finding Nemo, then Finding Dory
- The Cars block: Cars, Cars 2, Cars 3
- The Incredibles block: The Incredibles, then Incredibles 2
- The Inside Out block: Inside Out, then Inside Out 2
- The unplaced stand-alones in release order: A Bug’s Life, Ratatouille, Up, Coco, Onward, Soul, Luca, Turning Red, Lightyear, Elemental, Elio, and Hoppers
- WALL-E, if you want the explicit far-future setting to close the marathon
The position of the blocks relative to one another is not confirmed Pixar chronology. They are grouped this way so that direct sequels stay together and the films with no reliable fictional date are not given false precision.
Where does Lightyear fit?
Lightyear is best treated as a Toy Story-related spin-off, not as a direct chapter to insert between Toy Story 4 and Toy Story 5. You can watch it after completing the Toy Story series or place it with the other stand-alone Pixar films. Its connection to the franchise is not a reason to disrupt the confirmed Woody-and-Buzz story sequence.
Why the Pixar Theory is not an official watch order
Pixar films contain recurring visual references, Easter eggs, objects, and background details. Fans have used those connections to propose a shared-universe timeline often called the Pixar Theory. It is a fun interpretive exercise, but Pixar has not confirmed that all of its feature films occupy one literal continuity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat distinction matters because a theory timeline can turn a visual reference into a supposed historical date, or treat a design resemblance as proof that two films share the same world. A useful confidence system is:
| Confidence | What it means | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| High | The films themselves establish a direct prequel, sequel, or continuing storyline. | Monsters University before Monsters, Inc.; Finding Nemo before Finding Dory. |
| Medium | The broad historical or futuristic setting is explicit, but its position relative to unrelated films is not. | The Good Dinosaur, Brave, and WALL-E. |
| Low | The order depends mainly on Easter eggs, visual references, or the fan-created Pixar Theory. | A complete timeline connecting every Pixar feature. |
Pixar movies in release order
Release order is the recommended choice for a first-time Pixar marathon. It preserves the studio’s creative development and lets you experience sequels in the context in which audiences originally received them. The years below follow Pixar’s feature-film catalog sequence; exact release dates can vary by territory.

What are the clearest setting anchors?
The Good Dinosaur: prehistoric alternate history
The asteroid-misses-Earth premise makes this Pixar’s clearest prehistoric setting. Because the film changes the course of Earth’s history, it should be described as an alternate-history anchor rather than the literal beginning of a shared Pixar Earth.
Brave: an ancient, pre-modern Scotland
Brave draws on Highland legends, clans, and a kingdom before modern technology. It can reasonably appear near the front of a setting-based list, but no precise year is established.
WALL-E: a far-future Earth
The 700-year cleanup period and the humans’ life aboard the Axiom make WALL-E Pixar’s strongest future-setting anchor. Place it last only when you are using setting as an interpretive guide, not because Pixar has declared it the endpoint of a shared chronology.
Hoppers: current release order is the only reliable placement
Hoppers is a 2026 Pixar feature about scientists transferring human consciousness into lifelike robotic animals so people can communicate with animals. Pixar’s official information gives it a March 6, 2026 theatrical date. Its premise does not establish a reliable place in a Pixar-wide timeline, so list it by release date or treat it as a current stand-alone.
Where can you watch the Pixar movies?
For the easiest availability check, start with the Disney+ Pixar collection. Disney+ maintains an official Pixar hub that groups movies, shorts, originals, throwbacks, and franchise collections. That makes it a useful starting point for a marathon, but availability can vary by country and change over time. Use the service’s search tool before planning to watch a particular title, especially the newest releases.
A physical Pixar companion for families and collectors
If you are watching with children or building a Pixar collection, the Pixar Storybook Collection is a natural companion. Disney Books lists it alongside film-specific storybooks, read-alongs, and other Disney/Pixar publications. It is a collection of stories—not an official chronological guide—so choose it for reading and collecting rather than as evidence for the Pixar Theory. Editions, sellers, prices, and inventory can change, so verify the current listing before buying.

- Setting-focused viewer: begin with The Good Dinosaur and Brave, keep the uncertain stand-alones in release order, and finish with WALL-E.
- Pixar Theory fan: explore a fan timeline for its Easter eggs, but label it unofficial and do not mistake speculation for Pixar-confirmed continuity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an official Pixar chronological order?
No. Pixar has not published or confirmed one complete chronological order connecting every feature film. Direct prequels and sequels have clear story order, but a timeline connecting all stand-alone films is a fan interpretation based on Easter eggs and visual references.
Where does Lightyear fit in the Pixar movie order?
Watch Lightyear after the Toy Story films or alongside the other Pixar stand-alone movies. It is a Toy Story-related spin-off, not a direct chapter to place between Toy Story 4 and Toy Story 5.
Should I watch Pixar movies in release order or chronological order?
Release order is best for a first viewing because it preserves Pixar’s creative and technical evolution. Use chronological or franchise order for a rewatch when you specifically want to keep prequels and sequels together.
Where can I watch Pixar movies?
Disney+ maintains an official Pixar collection, but its catalog varies by region and changes over time. Search for each film in your country before starting a marathon.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Watch Pixar in release order if this is your first marathon. For a chronological rewatch, preserve the confirmed franchise sequences, use The Good Dinosaur, Brave, and WALL-E only as broad setting anchors, and leave undated stand-alone films in release order. No complete official Pixar timeline exists.
