Pig-Butchering Scams vs. Romance Scams: How to Tell the Difference

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical distinction is what the criminal ultimately wants you to do. In a romance scam, a supposed partner uses an emotional relationship to obtain money for a personal pretext such as an emergency or travel. In a pig-butchering scam, the relationship is used to steer you into a supposed investment—often cryptocurrency on a fake website or app controlled by the fraudster. The patterns overlap: an investment pitch can arrive after romantic grooming, and a romance scammer may add an investment story later.

What each term means

Romance scam

A romance scam is a broad fraud pattern built around a fabricated or deceptive romantic relationship. The criminal may contact you through a dating app, social network, messaging service or another online channel, then communicate frequently to create a sense of intimacy. The person often gives a story explaining why an in-person meeting is impossible: overseas work, military service, illness, travel problems or another apparently reasonable obstacle.

After trust has formed, the request is usually tied to a personal expense. Common pretexts include an urgent medical bill, a stranded journey, a visa or customs payment, a family crisis, rent, a business problem or a request for gift cards. The criminal may ask for a loan, a direct transfer, cryptocurrency or goods. A romance scam can also introduce an investment pitch; once that happens, it fits the investment-led pattern described below as well.

Pig-butchering or relationship-investment scam

Pig-butchering is a relationship-investment scam. “Relationship” can mean romance, friendship or another confidence-building connection. The fraudster spends time making the target feel understood and then offers to teach investing, share a “secret” strategy or introduce a trading opportunity. Cryptocurrency is common, but the defining feature is not the asset. It is the use of a trusted relationship to persuade you to deposit money into an opportunity the criminal controls or recommends.

The victim is typically directed to a website, mobile app or wallet that looks professional. The account may show profits that do not exist. When the victim tries to withdraw, the operator demands an additional tax, verification payment, release fee or deposit. That demand is part of the fraud, not evidence that the balance is real.

The difference in one view

Question Romance scam pattern Pig-butchering / relationship-investment pattern
What builds trust? A fabricated or deceptive romantic relationship, often with frequent messages and a reason the person cannot meet. Friendship, romance or another confidence-building relationship; the fraudster may wait before introducing the financial pitch.
What is the money pretext? A claimed emergency, travel, medical need, family problem or other personal expense. An investment story may be added later. A purported investment or trading opportunity, often involving cryptocurrency, with coaching or a recommended platform.
How does money move? Direct transfers, gifts, gift cards, cryptocurrency or purchases sent for the person’s stated need. Deposits to a fake platform or wallet; displayed returns encourage larger deposits, followed by supposed taxes or fees at withdrawal.
Most useful warning sign A new online romantic contact asks for money or gifts, cannot meet, or repeatedly moves the conversation away from the original platform. An online contact offers investment advice, promises gains or little risk, or tells you to deposit through a specific platform or app.
What the criminal wants Payment for a personal story, sometimes repeatedly. Increasing deposits into an investment scheme the criminal controls or promotes.

These are common patterns rather than a legal taxonomy or a diagnostic test. An investment-led romance fraud belongs in both descriptions in ordinary usage. Official agencies also use overlapping labels, so focus on the requested action and the money path rather than on the name.

How a pig-butchering scam usually unfolds

1. Unsolicited contact and identity building

The approach may come through a dating application, social media, an unexpected text or a message that appears to be from an acquaintance. The account can use stolen photographs, a false name, a copied professional history or a story about living abroad. A wrong-number message can be an opening line rather than an accident.

2. Sustained conversation

The fraudster keeps the exchange active and personal. They ask about your work, family, goals and finances, mirror your interests and offer encouragement. Moving the conversation to a private messaging channel can reduce the platform’s ability to detect the account or warn you. Affection and investment advice can coexist; one does not make the other safe.

3. The “helpful” investment introduction

The contact may claim to have a relative in finance, special market knowledge or a reliable way to earn. They may say they will teach you step by step, start with a small amount or show you their own successful account. Promises of guaranteed or unusually high returns, “no risk,” exclusive access or pressure to act quickly are serious warning signs.

4. A convincing but fraudulent platform

You may be sent to a site or app with charts, account statements, customer support and testimonials. Regulators warn that scammers can impersonate legitimate investment professionals or brokerages and can direct targets to legitimate-looking websites or popular apps. An app-store listing, polished design or visible account balance does not establish that the investment or the person recommending it is genuine.

  • No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
  • Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.

5. Fabricated growth and escalating deposits

The screen may show profits that rise rapidly. The fraudster uses those figures to encourage a larger deposit, sometimes suggesting that you borrow, liquidate savings or involve family members. The FBI has described fake websites and apps that let victims track investments and create the impression that balances are “growing exponentially.” The displayed gains are numbers in a database, not proof of a trade or a withdrawable asset.

6. The withdrawal trap

When you request a withdrawal, the operator may demand a tax, anti-money-laundering payment, account upgrade, security deposit or release fee. Paying one charge rarely ends the demands; another obstacle can follow. Do not send a supposed tax or fee to unlock your own money. A legitimate tax obligation is not settled by paying an anonymous person through a chat conversation or an unfamiliar wallet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Newer collection tactics

In a June 2026 alert, the FBI described schemes in which scammers built a relationship, recommended cryptocurrency applications, displayed fake returns and then directed some victims to withdraw cash and hand it to couriers. A request to meet a courier, deliver cash or use a “broker” does not make the transaction legitimate.

How a conventional romance scam differs

The request is personal rather than an investment deposit

The key request is usually framed as help for the person, not participation in a market. The story may involve an emergency, travel, medical treatment, legal trouble, a family member or a temporary cash-flow problem. The emotional leverage is the same: refusing feels like abandoning someone you believe you love.

The relationship may continue after payment

A romance scammer can provide explanations for delays, promise repayment, invent a new crisis or ask for a different payment method. The absence of an investment dashboard does not make a request safe. A person you have never met who needs money, gifts or account access should be treated as unverified regardless of how long you have communicated.

Romance fraud can become investment fraud

Some criminals first ask for ordinary financial help and later propose an investment. Others begin with an investment conversation and add romantic language. Once the requested action changes from helping a person to depositing money on a recommended platform, evaluate it as an investment scam as well as a romance scam.

Warning signs that deserve a pause

  • A new online contact avoids video calls or an in-person meeting while offering increasingly specific reasons.
  • The person quickly expresses intense affection, asks you to keep the relationship secret or discourages you from consulting friends and family.
  • They move you off the dating or social platform and insist on a private channel.
  • They request money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, banking credentials, identity documents or access to your device.
  • They introduce an investment, promise guaranteed returns, describe the risk as minimal or claim that ordinary investors cannot obtain the opportunity.
  • They tell you which app, website, wallet or account to use and offer to coach every deposit.
  • The account displays rapid profits, but independent records, regulated statements or a verifiable custodian are missing.
  • A withdrawal triggers a tax, fee, insurance payment, account upgrade or “verification” deposit.
  • The contact asks you to recruit relatives, borrow money, withdraw cash or hand funds to a courier.

One sign is not a mathematical test, and legitimate people can have travel or financial problems. The combination of an unverifiable identity, emotional pressure and a request that puts your money under another person’s control is enough reason to stop and verify independently.

A decision framework before you send anything

Ask what action is being requested

Write the request in neutral terms: “Send money for a personal emergency,” or “Deposit money through a platform recommended by an online contact.” This removes the emotional story and reveals whether you are making a gift, a loan or an investment. If you cannot explain the transaction without repeating the person’s promises, pause.

Separate the person from the opportunity

Do not treat affection, daily messages or a photograph as evidence that an investment is real. Verify the person through independent sources and verify the investment through the regulator or institution that supposedly oversees it. Use contact details you find independently, not a link or phone number supplied in the chat.

Test the withdrawal claim before depositing

Ask who legally holds the assets, where the company is registered, which regulator supervises it and how withdrawals work. A screenshot, an app balance or a testimonial is not independent verification. If the platform cannot answer clearly, or if the answer leads back to the same person’s private instructions, do not deposit.

Get a second view

Tell a trusted person exactly what was said and show the messages, website and payment instructions. A second observer can notice pressure, inconsistencies or a familiar script while you are focused on the relationship. Do this before sending money, not after a withdrawal problem appears.

What to do if you have sent money

  1. Stop the conversation and stop paying. Do not send a final “release” fee, tax or verification deposit. Block the account after preserving the evidence.
  2. Contact the payment provider immediately. Call the bank, card issuer, wire service, payment application, cryptocurrency exchange or other provider used. Explain that you suspect fraud and ask what cancellation, recall, account-freeze or fraud-review options exist. Do not assume a transfer can be reversed; speed improves the chance that any available action is still possible.
  3. Secure your accounts. Change passwords that the scammer may know, enable multifactor authentication, review email-forwarding rules and sign out of unfamiliar sessions. If you shared identity documents or account credentials, tell the relevant financial institution and ask about additional monitoring or replacement procedures.
  4. Preserve the record. Save messages, usernames, profile links, phone numbers, email addresses, screenshots, website and app names, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, dates, amounts, bank details and instructions from the scammer. Keep original files where possible; do not edit screenshots to remove context.
  5. Report the accounts and websites. Use the dating or social platform’s fraud-report process and report the app or site to its host or store where appropriate. Reporting can help limit further targeting even when it cannot recover your funds.
  6. Tell someone you trust. Shame and secrecy benefit the criminal. A friend, relative, attorney or qualified counselor can help you document events and avoid additional payments.

Where to report in the United States

For suspected internet crime, file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov. Include identifying and transaction details, including wallet addresses and payment information, because those details help investigators connect reports. Consumer-fraud reports can be submitted through ReportFraud.gov. Also report the profile to the dating or social platform where the contact began.

Do not pay a “recovery agent” who guarantees that a government connection or special software will retrieve your funds.

What recovery can—and cannot—be promised

Recovery is uncertain. Investor.gov and the FBI warn that losses involving cryptocurrency and overseas wires may be difficult or impossible to recover. A bank, exchange, law-enforcement agency or legitimate reporting service cannot promise that funds will be returned. Be especially cautious after the first loss: criminals often sell a second service claiming to trace the cryptocurrency, unlock the account or recover the balance for an upfront fee.

Keep every confirmation number and report reference. Even when a transfer cannot be reversed, prompt notification may help a provider secure an account, stop a pending transaction or identify a related fraud pattern.

Scale of the problem and what the numbers mean

The Federal Trade Commission reported more than $1 billion in losses from romance scams in 2023 in a February 2024 consumer alert. That figure covers romance scammers broadly; it is not a pig-butchering-only estimate.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported more than $2 billion in losses from cryptocurrency investment schemes in 2022 in a March 2023 public service announcement. That is a different year and a different category from the FTC figure, so the totals should not be added or treated as a single prevalence measure. Both are reported losses, not a complete count of incidents; many victims never report.

Questions people ask

Does a romantic relationship automatically mean it is pig-butchering?

No. Pig-butchering requires the investment-led mechanism: the relationship is used to obtain deposits into a purported investment. A request for help with a personal expense is more characteristic of a romance scam, although the same criminal may use both tactics.

Is every cryptocurrency investment recommendation a scam?

No, but an online contact who offers to teach you cryptocurrency investing, promises returns or little risk, or directs you to a specific platform is a serious warning sign. Verify the opportunity independently and never rely on the contact’s screenshots, testimonials or app balance.

Why would a fake platform show profits?

Fabricated gains create confidence and encourage larger deposits. The numbers are controlled by the operator, so they can rise without any real asset being purchased. A demand for tax or fees before withdrawal is a continuation of the scheme.

Should I pay the withdrawal fee just once?

No. Do not send more money to release an account or pay a supposed tax requested through the scammer’s instructions. Contact your payment provider and report the fraud instead.

What if I am embarrassed and have already deleted the messages?

Report what you remember and gather remaining evidence: transaction records, email headers, phone numbers, usernames, wallet addresses, app names and dates. Tell a trusted person and notify the payment provider immediately. Partial records are still useful.

Can an app-store listing prove the investment is legitimate?

No. Regulators warn that scammers can use legitimate-looking websites, popular apps, fake testimonials and impersonated professionals. Confirm the company, registration and custody arrangements through independent official sources before depositing.

The safest rule

When an online relationship and an investment request arrive together, treat the proposed transaction—not the apparent affection—as the thing to verify. Do not send money for a personal emergency or deposit into a platform recommended by the contact until you have independently confirmed who controls the funds, how withdrawals work and which regulator oversees the provider. If you cannot verify those basics, stop communicating, preserve the evidence and report the account.
