From 1980s films to a quieter screen career
Cates became widely recognized for Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and Gremlins (1984). Those roles remain the clearest markers of her film career for many viewers.
Apple TV’s biography describes Princess Caraboo (1994) as her last film for almost a decade, and lists a later acting appearance in The Anniversary Party (2001). That timeline shows a substantial gap in film work, but it does not by itself explain why she stepped back.
What Phoebe Cates did after acting
A 2006 ABC News profile documented Cates running Blue Tree, a gift boutique on Madison Avenue in New York City. The profile also reported that she was married to actor Kevin Kline and that they had two children, Owen and Greta. Those details provide family context, not proof of a specific motive for her career choices.

In the profile, Cates described her approach to gift giving: “Think about the recipient in a broader way,” she said. “Don’t push your own agenda. … Think about them.” It is a remark about choosing gifts, not a statement about leaving acting.
What is known about Blue Tree today
Blue Tree’s official online store was accessible on October 8, 2026, and displayed categories including clothing, jewelry, accessories, home goods, gifts, and confections. That establishes an online retail presence; it does not confirm current physical-store hours or whether the Madison Avenue shop is still operating. A September 2026 secondary article says the physical boutique remains there, but that claim was not independently confirmed by the store’s official information.

Why did Phoebe Cates stop acting?
The sources establish that Cates’s film work became much less frequent and that she was running a boutique by 2006. Apple TV’s biography says she stepped away from movie work to raise her children, but the sources available here do not establish every detail of her private reasoning or provide a recent first-person account confirming that as her sole explanation. It is more accurate to describe the documented change than to reduce it to a definitive “quit Hollywood for family” story.
