A new short documentary, Fletcher Street, brings the real riders of North Philadelphia’s Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club into focus. Directed by David Darg and Jannat Gargi, the film follows horse care, mentorship and everyday club life. As of Philadelphia Magazine’s September 29, 2026 report, it was touring festivals around the country; the report did not give screening dates or a streaming release.
What the documentary shows
Fletcher Street centers on the people and horses of the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club. Philadelphia Magazine describes young riders brushing and feeding horses, club founder Ellis “El-Dog” Ferrell sharing stories, and his son Darrin Ferrell helping a nervous rider gain confidence. The report also describes riders galloping through a Philadelphia park with a Juneteenth flag.
Those scenes place horsemanship alongside relationships between generations: learning to care for an animal, building riding confidence, and sustaining a community where young people can learn. Director David Darg told Philadelphia Magazine, “Cities need clubs like Fletcher Street, not just for horses.”
Who are the real-life riders?
They are members of the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, a North Philadelphia community organized around horses and youth horsemanship. Visit Philadelphia says Ellis Ferrell founded the club in 2004 and traces its origins to the 1940s. The latter is an account of the community’s roots, not the founding date of the current organization.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Visit Philadelphia describes the nonprofit as mostly self-funded, with youth learning to ride and care for horses in informal stables. The club’s visibility has grown through earlier documentation as well: its own media timeline lists a 2005 Life magazine feature and a 2006 visual book by photographer Martha Camarillo, who spent two years photographing riders.
Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club is not the only Philadelphia organization offering equestrian programs. The separate Philadelphia Urban Riding Academy describes its own horse-care, academic-learning, and English and Western riding programs; it should not be confused with the club featured in this film.

How Fletcher Street differs from Concrete Cowboy
| Title | What it is | Connection to Fletcher Street |
|---|---|---|
| Fletcher Street | A short documentary directed by David Darg and Jannat Gargi. | Follows the real Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club and its riders. |
| Concrete Cowboy | A 2021 fictionalized feature drama starring Idris Elba, Caleb McLaughlin and Jharrel Jerome, according to Netflix. | Draws on the club and its community as the setting and inspiration for a fictional story. |
| Ghetto Cowboy | Greg Neri’s 2011 novel. | The Fletcher Street club’s media timeline identifies the novel as the basis for the Netflix feature; it is fiction, not a nonfiction account or the new documentary. |
Visit Philadelphia calls Concrete Cowboy a fictionalized story about the club. Netflix describes its plot as a rebellious teen finding a place in a Philadelphia community of Black cowboys. Idris Elba, who acted in and produced the feature, said in a 2021 interview that at times filming felt like shooting a documentary; that comment concerns the making of Concrete Cowboy, not the new film.
Where and when can you watch it?

That report supplied no screening schedule, ticket details, or streaming or distribution outlet, so a specific way to watch cannot be confirmed from the available information. The club’s practical needs behind the spotlight
Philadelphia Magazine’s September 2026 report says the club remained short on space and funding and had not yet gained access to larger stable facilities in East Fairmount Park that were promised in 2023. That is the status described in the magazine’s report, not a separately verified government update. The contrast matters: a film can bring attention to the riders and their work, while the club still faces practical needs for room and resources.
For a related fictional story, Greg Neri’s Ghetto Cowboy is the source novel behind Concrete Cowboy; it is not a companion book to the documentary.
