Phil Collins Health Update: What He Said About Drumming, Nerve Damage and His Future

Phil Collins has not announced a return to drumming. The widely reported “two years after retiring” update came from Phil Collins: Drummer First, a Drumeo documentary released on December 18, 2024. However, the interview used in the film was recorded in October 2022—months after Collins’s final Genesis performance in March 2022. In that interview, Collins said years of drumming, problems with his hands and legs, and his wider physical limitations had made it impossible to perform at the standard he expected of himself.

Subsequent reports in January and August 2026 gave a more serious picture of his health, including multiple knee surgeries, difficulty walking, nerve damage, kidney problems, type 2 diabetes and a life-threatening hospitalization linked to an alcohol relapse. Collins has discussed the possibility of returning to a studio, but there is no confirmed album, recording schedule or live comeback.

The “two years after retiring” wording needs context

The original headline describes a specific 2024 news cycle, not a newly filmed medical announcement. Collins’s conversation with Drumeo was recorded in October 2022 and later included in Phil Collins: Drummer First, which premiered publicly on December 18, 2024.

That means the two-year gap referred to the period between the interview’s recording and the documentary’s release. It did not mean Collins had just received a new diagnosis in December 2024, nor did it establish that he had retired from every form of music.

Collins’s final Genesis show took place in March 2022 during The Last Domino? Tour. He performed seated and sang while his son, Nic Collins, played drums. The 2024 documentary interview was therefore best understood as a candid reflection on losing the instrument that had defined much of Phil Collins’s identity—not as a formal announcement that every part of his career was over.

What Collins said about stopping drumming

In the Drumeo interview, Collins explained that drumming had taken a substantial toll on his hands and legs. His position was practical as well as emotional: if he could no longer play at the level he once had, he would rather stop than offer a diminished performance.

He did not completely rule out trying again. Collins left open the possibility that he might wake up one day able to hold drumsticks and give it another attempt. But that comment was an expression of uncertainty and hope, not an announced rehabilitation plan or a promise to perform again.

His son Nic connected the problems to several factors: decades of drumming, back trouble, aging and a major neck operation that contributed to drop foot. ABC News described drop foot as difficulty lifting the front of the foot because of weakness or paralysis in the muscles responsible for raising it. That explanation describes the symptom; it is not a new diagnosis of Collins’s overall condition.

The available 2024 reporting did not identify one newly announced illness as the sole reason Collins stopped drumming. The more accurate explanation is cumulative physical damage and reduced mobility, described by Collins and his family over time.

What newer 2026 reports revealed

Later interviews provided considerably more detail than the 2024 documentary discussion.

January 2026: surgeries, mobility and sobriety

In a BBC interview for Eras: Phil Collins with Zoe Ball, reporting published on January 21 and 22, 2026 said Collins had undergone five knee surgeries and needed help walking. He also said he had a 24-hour live-in nurse to help with medication and daily care.

Collins described the preceding years as extremely difficult and frustrating. He said he wanted to become fully mobile and healthy again. He also reported that he had been sober for two years after alcohol-related kidney problems and hospitalization.

That interview left open the possibility of returning to a studio to make music. It did not announce an album, a recording date or a performance schedule.

August 2026: a life-threatening hospitalization

A more serious account appeared in reporting published August 2, 2026, based on an interview with The Sunday Times. Collins said a relapse into heavy drinking led to hospitalization and organ failure. He described kidney failure, other organs shutting down, discussions about life support and a hospital stay of roughly seven months. He said he had not consumed alcohol since that episode.

The same report said Collins continues to live with nerve damage that prevents him from drumming. It also attributed type 2 diabetes and continuing kidney problems to his current health picture.

These details should be treated as Collins’s own account as reported by established outlets, not as an outside medical evaluation. The separate January and August reports do not provide enough information to establish every detail of the timeline between the two interviews, so it would be inappropriate to infer a precise medical chronology beyond what Collins and the reports stated.

Why he is not expected to return to live drumming

The strongest current evidence points away from a return to live drumming. Collins has described physical limitations affecting his hands, legs and mobility, while the later reporting specifically attributed his inability to drum to nerve damage.

That is different from saying he has retired from all music. Collins has expressed interest in the possibility of working in a studio, where the physical demands and performance conditions would be different from a full concert tour. Still, “possible studio work” should not be turned into “comeback” or “new album”: no confirmed project has been announced.

There is also no reliable basis for describing Collins as terminally ill, completely bedridden or paralyzed. Those labels go beyond the reporting. The substantiated description is of serious, ongoing health problems, impaired mobility and an inability to drum.

His son Nic Collins and the final Genesis tour

Phil Collins’s physical limitations became especially visible during Genesis’s final touring cycle. Nic Collins took over behind the kit for The Last Domino? Tour, allowing Phil to remain involved as the band’s vocalist while performing seated.

The arrangement represented both continuity and a painful transition. Nic had to reproduce the drumming role his father had held for decades, while Phil continued to participate in the music despite no longer being able to play the instrument at the level he expected.

Phil Collins: Drummer First uses that transition as part of a broader career story. The documentary examines Collins’s work with Genesis, his solo recordings, Brand X and the Tarzan soundtrack, as well as his development from celebrated drummer into frontman, songwriter and producer.

Will Phil Collins perform at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction?

Collins is scheduled to be inducted as a solo artist into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 14, 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony is scheduled to debut on ABC and Disney+ in December.

Induction does not mean a performance has been confirmed. No announcement establishes that Collins will sing or drum at the ceremony. MusicRadar reported that, given his ongoing health problems, a final live appearance there appeared unlikely. The careful conclusion is that Collins is expected to be honored, but his participation in a performance remains unconfirmed and current reporting points away from one.

Is Phil Collins retired from music?

“Retired from drumming” is more accurate than “retired from music.” Collins has not announced a return to touring, and live drumming is not realistically expected. But he has continued to discuss the possibility of studio work.

That distinction matters because Collins has been more than a touring drummer. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame describes him as a drummer, singer, songwriter, producer and solo artist whose career spans more than 50 years. He joined Genesis in 1970, became the group’s lead singer after Peter Gabriel’s departure in 1975, and launched a major solo career with albums including Face Value and Hello, I Must Be Going!.

The Hall of Fame biography credits Collins and Genesis-related work with more than 150 million records sold worldwide. It also lists eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards, two Golden Globes and an Academy Award. Those achievements help explain why the loss of drumming has been described as a personal loss, not simply a change in stage logistics.

What fans can reasonably expect next

Question What the reporting supports
Will Collins return to drumming? He has not ruled out trying in theory, but ongoing nerve damage and other health problems make a live drumming return unrealistic based on the latest reporting.
Will he tour again? No tour or live comeback has been confirmed.
Will he make new music? Studio work remains a possibility he has discussed, not an announced project.
Will he perform at the 2026 Rock Hall ceremony? No performance has been confirmed, and current reporting suggests one is unlikely.
Is the 2024 documentary a new medical update? No. Its interview was recorded in October 2022, although the documentary was released in December 2024.

Where to explore Collins’s story

Readers interested in Collins’s own account of his career, alcohol use and health history may want to look for Phil Collins’s autobiography, Not Dead Yet, which covers his life and work from a personal perspective. It should be read as a memoir rather than as a substitute for medical reporting.

For listeners focusing on his solo identity, the Face Value vinyl box set is a relevant catalog release to investigate. Collins’s official site identifies a 2026 four-LP Face Value (Full Value) deluxe vinyl box set, while music retail listings also show vinyl and deluxe CD editions. Editions, formats and availability can vary by country and over time.

The documentary itself, Phil Collins: Drummer First, is the most directly relevant viewing reference for the 2024 interview. Drumeo’s official listing presents it as a drumming-focused examination of Collins’s career, rather than a standalone medical documentary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What health problems has Phil Collins reported?

Reports have attributed serious mobility and health problems to Collins, including nerve damage that prevents him from drumming, five knee surgeries, difficulty walking, kidney problems, type 2 diabetes and complications connected to alcohol use. These details come from Collins’s interviews and media reports, not an independent medical assessment.

Did Phil Collins retire from all music?

No. The evidence supports saying that he stepped away from drumming and has not announced a return to touring. Collins has still discussed the possibility of returning to a recording studio, although no album or recording schedule has been confirmed.

What does “two years after retiring from drumming” refer to?

It refers to the December 2024 release of the Drumeo documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First and the October 2022 interview used in it. Collins’s final Genesis performance was in March 2022, so the wording describes the timing of the documentary cycle rather than a newly filmed 2024 health interview.

Will Phil Collins perform at the 2026 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony?

A performance has not been confirmed. Collins is scheduled to be inducted as a solo artist on November 14, 2026, but current reporting suggests that an appearance involving live performance is unlikely given his health problems.

Is Phil Collins making a comeback?

There is no confirmed comeback. Live drumming is not realistically expected, and studio work remains only a possibility Collins has mentioned.

The Bottom Line

Phil Collins has not announced a return to drumming or live performance. The 2024 Drumeo story came from an interview recorded in 2022, while the genuinely newer 2026 reports describe extensive surgeries, impaired mobility, nerve damage, kidney problems, diabetes and a life-threatening alcohol-related hospitalization. Collins may still hope to make music in a studio, but that possibility is not the same as a confirmed comeback.
