Peter Yarrow, folk singer in Peter, Paul and Mary, is dead at 86; he died January 7, 2025, at his New York home. His publicist, Ken Sunshine, said bladder cancer caused his death. Yarrow was the trio’s “Peter,” a singer-songwriter whose recordings, activism, education work, and serious criminal conviction shaped a complicated legacy.
The Associated Press reported Yarrow’s death and cause in 2025; the NAMM oral-history archive also records his January 7, 2025, death date. Yarrow leaves behind a major place in American folk music, alongside a public record that requires both recognition of his achievements and direct acknowledgment of his conviction.

Who was Peter Yarrow?
Peter Yarrow was a New York-born singer, songwriter, producer, and activist best known as one-third of Peter, Paul and Mary. He was born May 31, 1938, in New York City, and his career connected the Greenwich Village folk revival with the American mainstream, civil-rights organizing, antiwar activism, and education.
Yarrow met Paul Stookey and Mary Travers through the New York folk scene after manager Albert Grossman helped bring the three performers together. Peter, Paul and Mary made their formal debut at Greenwich Village’s Bitter End in late 1961. The trio’s close harmonies and accessible arrangements helped carry traditional folk songs, contemporary songwriting, and politically engaged material beyond coffeehouses. The group’s early history is documented in the official Peter, Paul and Mary biography.

The trio’s recordings of Bob Dylan songs helped bring Dylan’s songwriting to a mass audience, while “If I Had a Hammer” and “Blowin’ in the Wind” became strongly associated with civil-rights and peace movements. Did Peter Yarrow write “Puff the Magic Dragon”?
Yes. “Puff the Magic Dragon” is identified in Yarrow’s official biography as one of the songs central to his songwriting work, and Peter, Paul and Mary’s recording became one of the group’s signature performances. The same biography also identifies “Day Is Done,” “Light One Candle,” and “The Great Mandala” among the important songs in his career.
Yarrow’s songwriting could move between the intimate and the public. “Day Is Done” brought a reflective tone to the trio’s repertoire, while “Light One Candle” and “The Great Mandala” expressed the moral and political concerns that ran through much of his work.
Readers who want to play or study the repertoire can use a Peter, Paul & Mary songbook credited to Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers. Edition details, inventory, price, and availability can vary, so the specific edition should be confirmed before purchase.

Was Peter Yarrow at the March on Washington?
Yes. Peter Yarrow and Peter, Paul and Mary performed at the 1963 March on Washington, the civil-rights gathering at which Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. The group’s public role made folk music part of the sound of the civil-rights and peace movements.
Yarrow’s activism also included anti-apartheid work and advocacy connected with equal rights, peace, environmental concerns, gender equality, homelessness, hospice care, public broadcasting, and education. The NAMM oral history of Peter Yarrow records his reflections on civil rights, the Vietnam War, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, and folk music’s role in public life.
“When I was in high school,” he recalls, “I heard The Weavers at Carnegie Hall singing songs like ‘If I Had a Hammer’ ‘Follow The Drinking Gourd’ and ‘Wasn’t That a Time.’ I was stunned by the extraordinary effect that music of conscience can have on people, particularly when they sing songs of conscience together.”
What happened to Peter, Paul and Mary after the 1960s?
Peter, Paul and Mary split in 1970, after which Yarrow pursued solo work. Yarrow later reunited with Stookey and Travers for concerts and benefits, and the three continued performing together until Travers’s death in 2009. The group’s post-breakup reunions preserved the trio as a living concert act even after its original period of pop success.

Yarrow also worked as a producer. His official biography says he produced the feature film You Are What You Eat and co-produced animated television specials based on “Puff the Magic Dragon.” The biography describes an Emmy nomination connected with that work; that detail is best treated as a biography-supplied career claim rather than an independently verified award record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What was Operation Respect?
Operation Respect was an educational nonprofit launched by Yarrow in 1999 around the song “Don’t Laugh at Me,” written by Steve Seskin and Allen Shamblin. The program sought to create safer, more respectful school environments and support children’s social and emotional development.
Yarrow’s official biography states, “The anthem of Operation Respect is the song, ‘Don’t Laugh at Me’, written by Steve Seskin and Allen Shamblin.” The biography also estimates that the program reached approximately 22,000 schools. That school figure is an estimate supplied by the official biography, not an independently verified current measure of adoption or enrollment.
What was Peter Yarrow’s criminal conviction and pardon?
In 1970, Peter Yarrow was convicted of taking immoral or improper liberties with a 14-year-old girl. He was sentenced to one to three years and served approximately three months before his release. President Jimmy Carter granted Yarrow a full pardon on January 19, 1981, as documented in the UPI archival report on the pardon and the Washington Post obituary.

The pardon did not erase the underlying historical event or the conviction. The Washington Post’s retrospective account also discussed later allegations. Those later allegations must remain clearly labeled as allegations and must not be merged with the 1970 conviction.
After he was disinvited from a festival in 2019, Yarrow issued a statement reported in Associated Press-related coverage: “I fully support the current movements demanding equal rights for all and refusing to allow continued abuse and injury — most particularly of a sexual nature, of which I am, with great sorrow, guilty.” The statement is part of the public record, but it does not remove the need to describe the conviction precisely.
How should Peter Yarrow’s legacy be understood?
Peter Yarrow’s legacy has two inseparable parts. He helped make Peter, Paul and Mary one of the defining folk groups of the 1960s, recorded songs that became linked with civil rights and peace activism, wrote and performed enduring material, and built education work around participation and respect. He was also convicted of a sexual offense involving a minor, served prison time, received a presidential pardon, and remained the subject of serious public controversy.
Yarrow described the continuity of his career in his official biography with the words, “We’re part of a long train ride.” That image fits the musical history: the Weavers’ influence, the Greenwich Village folk revival, Dylan’s songwriting, the civil-rights movement, and later educational work all formed part of the tradition he carried forward. It does not require overlooking the harm and accountability issues that also belong in a complete account of his life.
Peter Yarrow died at his New York home on January 7, 2025, at age 86. His publicist identified bladder cancer as the cause of death, while his music and public record leave behind a legacy that is culturally significant, socially engaged, and deeply complicated.
