Pete Best announced in April 2025 that he was retiring from personal appearances and performing with the Pete Best Band. The announcement was specifically about appearances and performances with his band; it did not say that he was leaving every form of music or public activity.
What Pete Best announced
The Guardian reported on April 9, 2025, that Roag Best had announced the news over the preceding weekend. Roag said: “My brother Pete Best has announced today he is retiring from personal appearances and performing with the group. His daughter has informed me it’s due to personal circumstances.” Pete Best’s own response was: “I had a blast. Thank you.” The Guardian’s report does not give a fuller explanation from Pete.
Why is Pete Best retiring?
The only reason given in the announcement was “personal circumstances,” conveyed by Roag Best and attributed to Pete’s daughter. No further details were disclosed, so there is no basis to say what those circumstances are.

What the retirement announcement does—and does not—cover
It covers Pete Best’s personal appearances and performing with the Pete Best Band. It does not establish that the band has dissolved, that he has stopped all music-making, or that he has ended every kind of public or professional activity. The announcement was made in April 2025; the reporting cited here does not establish what his activities have been since then.
Pete Best’s time with the Beatles
Best auditioned for the newly named Beatles in August 1960 and joined the group for its three-month German residency later that year. He played with the Beatles until 1962. The Guardian notes that Brian Epstein dismissed him and Ringo Starr replaced him, while also reporting that George Martin wanted an experienced session drummer for recording sessions; the circumstances should not be reduced to a single cause.

Best’s family owned Liverpool’s Casbah Coffee Club. His mother, Mona, booked John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ken Brown to play there, making the venue an important setting in the band’s early history. The Guardian corrected an earlier version of its report: Best’s first performance was under the Beatles name, not as a member of the Quarrymen.

Best continued performing with other groups before taking a 20-year break from live performance. In 1988, he returned to performing by forming the Pete Best Band with his brother. A 2015 interview published by The Beatles Story Museum described him, then 73, as performing internationally with the band. That interview is a snapshot from 2015, not evidence of his current schedule.

In the same museum interview, Best said he still played drums daily, sometimes at home and sometimes at the Casbah. Recalling the venue, he said: “Yes, it really is a special place. If it hadn’t been for The Casbah The Beatles may not have happened.” That is Best’s personal reflection on the club’s importance.
