At a London event in April 2024, Pet Shop Boys frontman Neil Tennant asked what Taylor Swift’s equivalent of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” might be. His question was a personal judgment about the music, not a claim that Swift lacks popular songs—and he also praised her voice, production and ability to bring generations of fans together.
What Neil Tennant said about Taylor Swift
Tennant made the remarks during the Guardian Live conversation “An Evening with Pet Shop Boys” in London on 22 April 2024, according to The Independent’s report. The comments were reported publicly on 25 and 26 April, shortly after Swift released The Tortured Poets Department and as the Pet Shop Boys’ album Nonetheless was arriving.
In MusicRadar’s account of the exchange, Tennant said Swift fascinated him because she was so popular, then asked: “What’s Taylor Swift’s Billie Jean?” He was comparing her enormous profile with the idea of a song that becomes an instantly recognizable cultural shorthand—not disputing that she has hit records.
When the interviewer suggested “Shake It Off,” Tennant responded, “Is it though?” and said it was not “Billie Jean.” He praised Swift’s voice and production, but described the melody as “almost recitative.” He also said he liked that her music brings people together, including across generations, while clarifying that what disappointed him was “the music,” not the lyrics. These are Tennant’s critical opinions as reported by MusicRadar, rather than an objective measure of Swift’s catalogue.

What the “Billie Jean” comparison means
Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” serves here as Tennant’s benchmark for a signature song: one he sees as emblematic of an artist and widely recognizable beyond the artist’s core audience. Whether any song meets that standard depends on what a listener means by “defining”—commercial reach, familiarity, influence, or personal association can produce different answers.
That distinction matters because asking for a single equivalent is not the same as saying an artist has no famous songs. Tennant’s response to “Shake It Off” shows that he did not consider it comparable to his chosen benchmark; it does not establish that other listeners share that view. The Independent likewise reported his question as “What is Taylor Swift’s ‘Billie Jean’?”

The release context—and what the sales figures do not prove
The exchange landed amid two album releases: Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department and the Pet Shop Boys’ Nonetheless. The Independent reported that Swift’s album sold more than 220,000 UK copies in its first three days, citing the Official Charts Company. That is a specific UK, three-day sales figure from 2024; it does not answer Tennant’s question about what makes a song culturally emblematic.
In a separate 25 April 2024 Associated Press interview, the Pet Shop Boys’ long-run sales were reported as 50 million records across 40 years. That career-wide figure and Swift’s three-day UK album total measure different things and should not be treated as a like-for-like comparison. Tennant’s exchange was about musical judgment, not a head-to-head sales test.

What the exchange can—and cannot—tell us about Swift’s popularity
Tennant’s comments offer one experienced pop songwriter’s perspective on the difference between popularity and the kind of signature song he has in mind. They do not explain why Swift is popular: the reports provide no formal study of that question, and they do not include a response from Swift. His appreciation of the communal, multigenerational audience is one observation about the experience around her music, not a complete account of its appeal.
For background on the band at the time, The Guardian’s February 2024 profile covered the Pet Shop Boys’ 15th album and their 40-year career. It predates the Swift conversation and is not a source for Tennant’s later remarks.
