Published in 2017, it brings together ten stories chosen because, as an author profile puts it, they represent “exceptions to society’s rules.” Murugan’s idea is that departures from familiar expectations can make those expectations visible—and open them to question.
What is The Goat Thief about?
The anthology follows people whose lives or actions unsettle what their community treats as ordinary. The stories are set in the arid Kongu landscape of rural Tamil Nadu, according to the publisher’s catalogue. Its examples include a lonely night watchman, a young goat thief threatened by a mob, and an old peasant. Murugan’s selection rationale offers a way into the collection, not a claim that every story makes the same argument. A person who steps outside a social rule can expose the rule itself: what it permits, whom it constrains, and how others respond when someone crosses its boundaries. The author profile also describes Murugan’s characters as hesitant and uncertain, shaped by fears and prejudices; their extraordinary actions are treated with empathy rather than judgment.
Why focus on exceptions to society’s rules?
The author profile reports that Murugan selected the stories because they represent exceptions to society’s rules. It explains his view that exceptions can put inherited rules into question and invite new perspectives. An exception, in this sense, is not simply a spectacle or a tidy lesson. It can reveal the expectations surrounding a person by showing what happens when that person does not—or cannot—conform.

That framing helps readers attend to both sides of a story: the character’s uncertain circumstances and the social response to them. It also leaves room for ambiguity. The available descriptions support a shared organizing idea, but do not establish that all ten stories target one institution or carry one uniform political message.

Kalachuvadu also lists Murugan’s Four Strokes of Luck and Sandal Wood Soap and Other Stories as other English short-story collections. They are separate books, not alternate editions of The Goat Thief. The catalogue’s account of Murugan’s wider Tamil short-story corpus says his first short story appeared in Kanayazhi in 1988 and his last in Kalachuvadu in 2015, across four collections; those dates describe that broader body of work, not the publication history of this English anthology.
