Does Perumal Murugan’s *The Goat Thief* Match the Depth of His Novels?

Perumal Murugan’s ten-story collection pairs close social observation with restrained humor and warmth, without offering easy resolutions.

Yes—with a different kind of momentum. *The Goat Thief* is a 2017 collection of ten short stories by Perumal Murugan, translated into English by N. Kalyan Raman. In Harsimran Gill’s 2017 review for Scroll, the stories retain the social depth of Murugan’s novels while bringing a lighter touch: warmth and humor alongside the fear, prejudice and vulnerability shaping ordinary lives.

What kind of book is The Goat Thief?

It is a collection, not a novel. The 2017 English-language edition, published by Juggernaut Books and translated by N. Kalyan Raman, contains ten stories. Google Books lists the same edition details and story count. Gill described it as the first anthology of Murugan’s short stories to appear in English at the time of her review.

Murugan selected the stories from his earlier work. As Gill reports it, he chose them for their “successful realisation of the form [of short story writing]” and for their attention to exceptions to society’s rules. He wrote: “Exceptions have the seductive power to make you forget yourself…Everything we encounter along the way is bound to be new: new sights, new beings, new objects. Exceptions have a way of demanding and bestowing new perspectives,” he writes.

How do the stories combine social depth and lightness?

Gill’s answer is in their balance, not in an escape from serious subjects. Rural places predominate, and community customs, caste, geography, fear and displacement shape what characters can do. In the urban stories, characters may feel ill at ease in their surroundings. Yet Gill also finds warmth and humor—restrained rather than broad, but capable of making the collection feel less relentlessly bleak.

#1 Best Overall

The lightness comes partly from the way Murugan makes everyday things matter. Gill points to objects and sensations such as a plastic tumbler, a chair, a smell or a toilet bowl: they can acquire a presence almost like that of a character. In “Shit,” the changing status of a tumbler gives a frame to caste privilege, manual scavenging and human hypocrisy. The ordinary object does not soften those realities; it makes their social meaning harder to overlook.

Why does the collection avoid easy moral answers?

Gill describes Murugan’s characters as flawed and insecure, entangled in their own fears and prejudices. His narration, in her reading, offers them empathy without turning that empathy into absolution or a tidy lesson. The titular goat thief can earn a reader’s sympathy, but the story does not supply a neat resolution or a sentimental transformation. Dignity and menace coexist.

To distinguish the forms, Gill offers a critical metaphor: Murugan’s novels resemble carefully constructed fields, shaped by human relationships and social context; his stories are like wells—dizzying, rewarding and unpredictable. The comparison is Gill’s way of describing the experience of reading, not a claim that the stories lack the novels’ social observation.

What context helps explain the book’s reception?

Gill’s review appeared after the controversy surrounding Murugan’s novel *Madhorubhagan*, published in English as *One Part Woman*. In 2015, the controversy led Murugan to announce that he would stop writing, prompting a response from the literary community. Gill places *The Goat Thief* against that background, but the collection’s interest is not reducible to the controversy: her review focuses on the stories’ form, social observation and attention to exceptions.

Gill reported that Murugan had written more than 80 short stories. That is the figure given in her 2017 review, not a current count. The ten stories in this collection are a separate, edition-specific fact.

Who is likely to enjoy The Goat Thief?

It is a strong choice for readers interested in how social structures shape private lives, especially readers open to fiction that observes rural communities without reducing its characters to examples. Those seeking a quick, reassuring moral or an uncomplicatedly cheerful read may find the stories’ unresolved tensions less comfortable. Readers drawn to Murugan’s novels may appreciate the same attention to social context in a shorter, more unpredictable form, with humor and warmth in the mix.
