In a 2023 interview, she said singing had helped her rebuild strength; that is her account of recovery, not a medical finding.
Who is Perri Hinton?
Hinton is a singer-songwriter from Perth, Western Australia. PerthNow reported on 28 August 2023 that she had accepted a place as a voice principal at Berklee College of Music in Boston, supported by a merit-based scholarship. She described the move as a rare opportunity and said she expected to miss her parents and grandparents while working hard in the United States. Read the 2023 PerthNow profile.
What happened to her lung?
In the PerthNow interview, Hinton said pneumonia led to her left lung collapsing when she was seven. She recalled being very ill, struggling to breathe, and feeling terrified. The article reproduced her recollection of having a fever “in the 40s” and of a doctor warning her family to take her to hospital. Those details are her account as reported in the interview, not independently verified medical records.
Hinton also said that singing strengthened her lungs as she recovered. That is a personal reflection on her experience; it should not be taken as evidence that singing treats pneumonia, repairs a collapsed lung, or replaces medical care.

Why did she move to America?
Hinton said she had searched for leading music universities and applied to Berklee. Her account of the application included an online form and an audition involving performance, sight-singing, improvisation, and a demonstration of musical ability. This describes her own admissions experience, not a universal checklist for Berklee applicants.
The move gave her the chance to pursue formal voice study at the Boston music college. She acknowledged the distance from family while describing it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The 2023 report establishes the scholarship as merit-based but does not state its amount or duration.
