Perry Mattfeld played Mel in the U.S. version of Shameless. Mel is a recurring supporting character who appears across seasons 8 and 9, with credits in seven episodes. She is Nessa Chabon’s partner and one of the residents of Fiona Gallagher’s apartment building—not a Gallagher, not Fiona’s girlfriend, and not a series regular.
Mel’s storyline is relatively small, but it connects several of the show’s late-season threads: Fiona’s attempt to run the building as a business, Nessa’s relationship and sexuality, Ford’s unusual role in a pregnancy arrangement, and the personal chaos surrounding the tenants. After Shameless, Mattfeld moved into a much larger television role as Murphy Mason in In the Dark, followed by film work and appearances in Long Bright River and Chad Powers.

Who does Perry Mattfeld play in Shameless?
Mattfeld plays Mel, a lesbian woman who lives with her partner, Nessa Chabon, in Fiona Gallagher’s apartment building. Jessica Szohr plays Nessa. Mel appears in seasons 8 and 9 and is credited in seven episodes, making her a recurring character rather than a main cast member or series regular. The character record for Mel places her firmly in the apartment-building ensemble.
That distinction matters because Mel is easy to misremember as part of the Gallagher family’s wider circle. She is connected to Fiona through the building, but she is not related to the Gallaghers. Her principal relationship on the show is with Nessa, and most of her story is told through the couple’s interactions with Fiona, Ford, and the other tenants.

Mel and Nessa’s relationship
Mel and Nessa are presented as a couple living in Fiona’s newly acquired apartment building. Their presence broadens the group of tenants Fiona must manage while she tries to turn the property into a profitable business. They are therefore part of both the building’s social life and Fiona’s increasingly complicated personal and financial problems.
Mel is not given a long independent arc comparable to Fiona’s, but she serves an important supporting function. Her relationship with Nessa gives the apartment storyline another established couple, while their personal circumstances intersect with the show’s recurring subjects of sex, family planning, trust, and housing instability.
What happens in Mel’s pregnancy storyline?
In season 8, Mel and Nessa are involved in a pregnancy-related plot that reveals Ford Kellogg’s unusual role in their family plans. In “Frank’s Northern Southern Express,” Mel and Nessa are shown celebrating pregnancies. Fiona then discovers that Ford voluntarily fathered both babies.
The important clarification is that Ford is identified as the biological father of both children. Mel is not Ford’s partner, and the plot does not turn her into a Gallagher or into a central romantic character in Fiona’s story. Instead, the pregnancy arrangement explains why Mel and Nessa are part of the season’s apartment and Ford storylines. The episode’s plot summary records the discovery about Ford’s involvement. Read the episode information for “Frank’s Northern Southern Express”.
For Fiona, the revelation is another complication in her relationship with Ford and in her attempt to keep control of the building. For Mel and Nessa, it establishes a significant family situation without turning either woman into a primary viewpoint character. That is typical of Mel’s role throughout the series: she helps carry an ensemble plot, but the show does not follow her life in the depth it follows the Gallaghers.
What happens to Mel in season 9?
Mel appears again in the season 9 episode “Black-Haired Ginger.” In that storyline, Nessa seeks advice about her sexuality, and Mel participates in a scene that demonstrates her own sexual identity. The sequence reinforces Mel’s role as Nessa’s partner and confidante rather than launching a separate, continuing storyline for her.

Her season 9 appearance is also the clearest reminder that Mel’s function is relational. The character is primarily defined by her connection to Nessa and by her place in the apartment community. Once the plot threads involving Fiona’s building, Ford, Nessa, and the pregnancies become less central, there is no comparable long-term reason for Mel to remain on screen.

Shameless does not give Mel a confirmed on-screen death or a definitive exit. Available character records do not establish a canonical post-season-9 fate, and there is no reliable production explanation in the supplied sources identifying a specific behind-the-scenes reason for her departure.
The most defensible explanation is simply narrative: Mel was a recurring supporting character whose purpose was tied to the apartment-building, Nessa, Ford, and pregnancy storylines. When those plots stopped requiring her presence, the character stopped appearing. It would be inaccurate to say that she was killed off, that the show explicitly wrote her out in a named episode, or that a particular production conflict caused her disappearance.
How many episodes of Shameless feature Perry Mattfeld?
Mattfeld is credited in seven episodes of the U.S. Shameless, spanning seasons 8 and 9. Mel is therefore best described as a recurring character with a small but recognizable role in Fiona’s apartment-building storyline—not as one of the show’s regular cast members.
Her limited episode count also explains why viewers may remember the character’s major details—the relationship with Nessa and the Ford-related pregnancy plot—without seeing a complete resolution. Mel’s story is an element of larger ensemble plots, not a self-contained character journey.

Perry Mattfeld’s career before and around Shameless
Mattfeld’s early career combined dance, musical theater, and screen acting. According to The CW’s official talent biography, she studied ballet, trained under Debbie Allen, appeared in the musical Alex in Wonderland, and worked in Mattel’s American Girl theater productions, where she portrayed the characters Kirsten and Kit.
Her early television credits included an appearance on Wizards of Waverly Place. She also studied at USC and worked on projects including Stitchers and Homecoming before and around her Shameless appearances. These credits established her as a working performer, but Shameless was still a relatively small recurring part compared with the role that followed.

In the Dark: Mattfeld’s major breakthrough
Mattfeld’s most important post-Shameless role was Murphy Mason, the lead character in The CW’s In the Dark. The series ran from 2019 to 2022.
Murphy is a blind, hard-living, disaffected young woman whose life becomes entangled in a dangerous mystery. The role required Mattfeld to carry a continuing drama rather than appear as one member of a large supporting ensemble. It also gave her a much broader emotional and dramatic range than Mel’s short apartment-building storyline.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat makes In the Dark the clearest turning point in Mattfeld’s career after Shameless: she went from a seven-episode recurring part to the central performer in a multi-season television series. The change is a difference in role size and responsibility, not a claim that Mel was unimportant to viewers or that Shameless directly caused the later opportunity.
Mattfeld’s film work after Shameless
Alongside television, Mattfeld’s film credits have included:
- Who Invited Them
- A Little White Lie
- Mending the Line
- The Idea of You (2024), in which she is credited as Eva in secondary filmography records
The Idea of You is a 2024 romantic comedy-drama presented by Prime Video. Prime Video’s abbreviated listing confirms the film’s title, year, and principal presentation, although its short cast display does not necessarily show every credited performer. That is why Mattfeld’s role is best stated from the available filmography information rather than inferred from the abbreviated platform listing.
Long Bright River: Mattfeld as Paula
In 2025, Mattfeld appeared as Paula in Peacock’s limited series Long Bright River. Peacock describes the show as an eight-episode thriller adapted from Liz Moore’s novel. Its story follows Philadelphia police officer Mickey Fitzpatrick as she investigates suspected murders in a neighborhood deeply affected by the opioid crisis.
Mattfeld’s appearance in Long Bright River is another supporting role, but it belongs to a more recent phase of her career in which she has combined television, streaming, and film work. Peacock’s series page confirms the show’s eight-episode structure and platform presentation.

Chad Powers: Ricky Hudson, not Chad Powers
Mattfeld plays Ricky Hudson in Hulu’s Chad Powers. Ricky is not the disguised quarterback at the center of the show. The title character, Chad Powers, is the identity adopted by former college quarterback Russ Holliday as he attempts to revive his football career.
Hulu’s official press material describes the series premise and identifies Mattfeld as Ricky. Contemporary coverage describes Ricky as assistant coach Jake Hudson’s daughter and a former track athlete trying to be taken seriously rather than dismissed as a nepotism hire. She is part of the coaching and football ensemble, giving Mattfeld a more consequential recurring presence than Mel had in Shameless.
The first season premiered on September 30, 2025, with six episodes released through October 28, 2025, according to Hulu’s press information and contemporaneous reporting. The season finale leaves Ricky aware that “Chad” is actually Russ Holliday. Check Hulu’s official Chad Powers press page for the confirmed series information.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mattfeld’s career trajectory in context
Mattfeld’s path since Shameless is best summarized as a progression from a small recurring ensemble part to a lead television role, followed by a mixture of film appearances and substantial streaming and television ensemble work:
- Shameless: Mel, a recurring character in seven episodes across seasons 8 and 9.
- In the Dark: Murphy Mason, the lead character in a series that ran from 2019 to 2022.
- Film work: appearances including Who Invited Them, A Little White Lie, Mending the Line, and The Idea of You.
- Long Bright River: Paula in Peacock’s eight-episode 2025 limited series.
- Chad Powers: Ricky Hudson, a member of the central football and coaching ensemble.
The key change is scale. Mel is memorable because she helps connect Fiona’s building story to Nessa and Ford, but Murphy Mason and Ricky Hudson give Mattfeld far more sustained opportunities to shape a series-level character.

Best Value
For viewers who want a physical copy rather than relying on changing streaming rights, a Shameless complete series DVD may be the most straightforward home-media option. Edition, region compatibility, seller, and stock should be checked before purchase; the existence of a complete-series release does not guarantee that every listing is currently available.
A season-specific DVD can also make sense for someone interested mainly in the late Fiona apartment-building storyline, but season 8 and season 9 editions may be harder to find or vary by region. Do not treat a home-media edition as an official Perry Mattfeld biography product or as an endorsement by the actor.
