Peggy Caserta, the Haight-Ashbury boutique owner and memoirist whose life became closely linked with Janis Joplin’s, died in Oregon in November 2024 at age 84. Reports disagree on the exact day: the San Francisco Chronicle reported November 19, while earlier coverage gave November 21.
Who was Peggy Caserta?
Caserta was a San Francisco counterculture figure, entrepreneur and author. Her Haight-Ashbury boutique, Mnasidika, became a gathering place for musicians and others in the neighborhood’s emerging hippie scene. Her life partner, Jackie Mendelson, later called it “the magnet and the hub for what became the hippie movement in San Francisco,” in an account published by the Chronicle.
Mnasidika and bell-bottom jeans
Caserta helped popularize bell-bottom jeans through alterations that added flared inserts. The Chronicle reports that Levi Strauss made an exclusive run of 30 dozen pairs for her shop in 1968; the company later introduced its 646 Bell Bottom Jeans. The account credits Caserta with helping popularize the style, not with inventing flared trousers by herself.
Laura Camerlengo, curator in charge of costume and textile arts at the de Young, described Caserta’s influence as a style “that transcended gender and social constructs,” the Chronicle reported.

How did Peggy Caserta know Janis Joplin?
Caserta met Joplin in 1966, when they were neighbors in Haight-Ashbury. They grew close, and retrospective accounts characterize their relationship as romantic. The phrase “former lover” is a later description: as The Advocate notes, the accounts it discusses do not show the women labeling each other “girlfriend” or “lover.” Caserta later wrote of loving and adoring Joplin, while also describing the painful invisibility she could feel in the relationship.
Caserta was with Joplin around the time of Joplin’s 1969 Woodstock performance. Their connection extended beyond romance: Caserta was part of the same San Francisco scene and supported Joplin as she developed as a performer. Holly George-Warren, author of Janis: Her Life and Music, said Caserta’s awe of Joplin’s talent helped bolster the singer’s confidence, according to SFGATE.

What did Caserta write about Joplin?
Going Down With Janis (1973)
Caserta’s first memoir, Going Down With Janis, was published in 1973 with ghostwriter Dan Knapp. The Chronicle and SFGATE report that she was in active heroin use during its creation. Caserta later said she did not remember having final editorial review and disavowed aspects of the book.
I Ran Into Some Trouble (2018)
In 2018, Caserta published I Ran Into Some Trouble with Maggie Falcon. The later memoir returned to her life with Joplin and addressed addiction and recovery. Looking back at the earlier book, Caserta wrote, “That book, that lurid and graphic sexual content and the drug scenes depicted, hurt everyone,” as quoted by The Advocate.

What did Caserta say about Joplin’s death?
Joplin’s death was officially attributed to a heroin overdose from a potent batch, according to the Chronicle. Caserta later offered a different theory in her memoir: she believed Joplin had fallen and struck her head. That was Caserta’s account, not an established medical or investigative finding. Some people blamed Caserta for Joplin’s death, but the reporting does not establish that she caused it.
