Why does Horses still feel alive?
Poetry that moves with a band
Smith’s achievement is not simply putting poems over rock accompaniment. The music gives the language a physical setting: phrases can stretch into incantation, break into speech, then collide with the band’s momentum. Fresh Air critic Ken Tucker describes the album as a meeting of poetry and rock, emphasizing Smith’s work with guitarist Lenny Kaye in turning poems into music. That is a critical interpretation, but it points to the record’s defining tension: the words retain their unruly character while the group gives them force and shape.
“Land” as a miniature of the album’s method
Tucker singles out the “Land” sequence, where Smith’s poem combines with “Land of 1000 Dances.” The sequence makes the album’s hybrid approach audible in its structure: poetic imagery and familiar rock-and-roll energy are not separate modes, but materials that can feed into each other. The effect is less like a conventional song cycle than a performance that keeps changing form without losing its momentum.

Collective authorship, not a poet alone
Smith described the band dynamic in her memoir Bread of Angels: “The poet may stand alone, but in merging with a band, surrenders to the wonder of teamwork. Thus joined, we birthed Horses together.” Sony Music/Legacy quoted that reflection in its anniversary announcement. It captures why the album’s poems do not feel merely set to backing tracks: the group relationship is part of the work’s identity.

The label identifies some of the listed tracks as previously unreleased. Patti Smith’s own August 22, 2025 post gives a sense of the material’s character: “It’s a double album and the second was compiled after much labor. Unearthed recordings, a couple live pieces from CBGB, youthful efforts gathering dust, little bits scavenged from half a century ago.” Her description frames the added disc as an archival companion rather than a replacement for the original album.
Was Patti Smith’s Horses remastered?
Yes. Sony Music/Legacy says the original album was remastered directly from its original 1/4-inch master tapes. That establishes the source used for the anniversary remaster; it does not establish that the LP and CD sound different from one another, or that one format is superior.

Should you choose the 2-LP or 2-CD edition?

The available information establishes the two formats, not their prices, packaging differences, territory-specific variations or present stock. Smith wrote, “There are 6,500 vinyls,” in her August 22, 2025 post. That is her stated quantity at announcement time, not a current inventory count or a guarantee that a copy remains available.
How did the album take shape?
In a retrospective published by SPIN, Steve Appleford reports that Smith chose John Cale as producer and that the band worked at Electric Lady Studios. Those details situate the album’s making within a collaborative studio process; they are reported by Appleford rather than newly verified archival findings here.

Appleford also discusses the 2025 anniversary concerts, where the band performed Horses material, and describes the force of Smith’s stage delivery. His account suggests one reason the album remains compelling as a performance document: its language was built to be embodied and delivered, not only read or preserved on a page.
