Chris’s encounter with that counterpart complicates his attempt to escape the consequences of his own life.
What happens in “Another Rick Up My Sleeve”?
The episode moves between Chris Smith’s alternate-dimension life and the fallout from the team’s failed mission in his home reality. In the alternate world, Chris finds a version of his life that seems to offer what he has lost: his brother Keith is alive, people admire him, and the local Harcourt is warmer toward him. But her life is already intertwined with another Rick Flag Jr.
Why are there two Rick Flag Jrs.?
The opening flashback shows prime-universe Harcourt and Rick together after spending the night together. Rick is preparing to deploy to Corto Maltese, where Peacemaker kills him in The Suicide Squad. This is a look back at the original Rick’s life, not a return from the dead. Joel Kinnaman plays him in the flashback and also plays the separate, more comedic Rick who lives in the alternate dimension.
James Gunn said the Rick and Harcourt relationship had been planned “since before we shot Season 1,” as reported by TV Insider. The reveal gives Harcourt’s resentment of Chris a personal history as well as a professional one: Chris killed someone she loved.

How is alternate Harcourt different?
Jennifer Holland plays both versions of Harcourt. The alternate version is not a wholly different person so much as a person shaped by a different life. Holland described them as genetically the same, while asking how another upbringing and childhood circumstances might produce “less damage or a different kind of damage.” TheWrap’s September 4, 2025 interview with Holland frames the contrast as a question of what different experiences can do to the same person.
Chris tries to reconnect with this Harcourt, but learns she is involved with the alternate Rick. The discovery punctures his hope that he can simply step into a happier version of his old life. This world contains familiar people, but their relationships belong to their own histories.

What does Chris do in the alternate dimension?
After a drunken night with the 11th Street Kids, Chris returns to the alternate dimension. He becomes caught up in an attack by the Sons of Liberty on Evergreen institutions, including the DMV, and helps stop their bombing attempt. Keith arrives in battle armor, and the community celebrates the pair as heroes.
That welcome is part of the danger for Chris. The alternate world offers a version of belonging and public approval that his home reality does not. Yet the people there are not simply replacements waiting for him: the alternate Rick is with Harcourt, and Chris is drawn toward a life that belongs to his counterpart.

The episode’s official synopsis also emphasizes the consequences of the mission. The plot recap and episode details are documented by A.V. Club and the Rotten Tomatoes episode listing.
What happens in the post-credits scene?
Post-credits spoiler: A scene involving Economos and Vigilante explains how Vigilante removed Economos’s pants while Economos was asleep in Harcourt’s bathtub. It turns the earlier odd detail into a brief character beat rather than another multiverse reveal, as noted in A.V. Club’s recap.
