Friendship is the A24 movie starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd that turns a suburban neighbor’s attempt at adult friendship into an escalating dark comedy. It is currently listed for U.S. streaming on Max-related services, with digital rental, purchase, and an A24 Blu-ray also available depending on region and stock.
Friendship is the A24 movie behind that ominous headline: a dark comedy starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd in which an ordinary attempt at adult friendship turns into an increasingly desperate and destructive obsession. It is not a movie that literally ruins viewers’ friendships; the phrase refers to what happens to the characters, especially suburban father Craig Waterman and his new neighbor, Austin Carmichael.
The film is currently listed for U.S. streaming on Max-related services, and it is also available to rent or buy digitally through major storefronts. Availability and prices can change, so check the individual service before starting playback.
Why Friendship is so uncomfortable
Craig wants something that should be simple: a close male friendship outside the routines of family and work. When charismatic new neighbor Austin appears to share his interests, Craig sees the possibility of an ideal connection. The problem is that he does not know how to let the relationship develop naturally.

His enthusiasm gradually becomes fixation. Small social misreadings acquire enormous emotional importance, normal interactions become humiliating, and Craig’s need for reassurance starts putting pressure on everyone around him. The comedy comes from recognizing the behavior as painfully ordinary even as it becomes more extreme.
That escalation is what separates Friendship from a conventional buddy comedy. The film begins with cringe-comedy discomfort, then moves into darker satire, horror, and surrealism. Its target is not friendship itself so much as loneliness, emotional immaturity, and the narrow ways some men have been taught to express vulnerability.
Tim Robinson’s work on I Think You Should Leave is a useful tonal reference for viewers deciding whether this is their kind of movie, but Friendship is not officially part of that series. The comparison describes the flavor of the discomfort, not a shared story world or franchise connection.
What is Friendship about?
Craig Waterman is a suburban father who becomes intensely invested in befriending Austin Carmichael, the charismatic man who has moved into his neighborhood. At first, their apparent compatibility makes the friendship seem promising. Craig soon becomes so attached to the relationship that rejection, awkwardness, and ordinary boundaries begin to feel like personal emergencies.
The resulting story is a darkly comic portrait of male loneliness and social desperation. Craig’s pursuit threatens not only the friendship but the lives and relationships surrounding both men. The film’s central tension comes from watching him treat emotional connection as something he can force into existence.

Cast and creative team
- Tim Robinson as Craig Waterman
- Paul Rudd as Austin Carmichael
- Andrew DeYoung, writer and director
- Kate Mara
- Jack Dylan Grazer
Robinson plays the increasingly unfiltered social desperation at the center of the movie, while Rudd’s apparent ease and charisma make Austin an especially potent object of Craig’s admiration. Their contrast gives the film its uneasy comic engine: one man is trying far too hard to create intimacy, while the other seems effortlessly comfortable in the relationship.
Friendship release date, rating, and runtime

| Wider theatrical release | May 23, 2025 |
| Rating | R for language and some drug content |
| Runtime | About 100 minutes |

The runtime varies slightly by listing: the U.S. streaming information gives 100 minutes, while A24’s Blu-ray page lists 101 minutes. “About 100 minutes” is therefore the least misleading description.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will Friendship actually ruin your friendships?
No. That is headline hyperbole, not a documented effect of the movie. The verified premise is that Craig’s behavior threatens his friendship with Austin and damages the characters’ lives. The film may make viewers squirm, recognize uncomfortable social behavior, or argue about whether Craig is tragic, ridiculous, or both—but there is no basis for claiming that it causes real-world friendship breakups.

Is Friendship worth watching?
If you like comedy built around escalating embarrassment, or films that turn ordinary emotional problems into something darker and stranger, Friendship is a strong match. Its appeal depends on tolerating sustained discomfort: Craig’s neediness does not remain a harmless joke, and the movie deliberately pushes the premise toward destructive consequences.
