When did Friendship come to HBO Max?
The film began streaming exclusively on HBO Max in the U.S. on September 5, 2025. It followed with an HBO linear-network premiere on September 6, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. That means the original “coming to HBO Max in September” wording now refers to a release that has already happened.

What is Friendship about?
Written and directed by Andrew DeYoung, Friendship follows Craig, a socially awkward suburban father who becomes intensely interested in his charismatic new neighbor, Austin. What begins as an attempt to build an adult male friendship grows increasingly obsessive and threatens the stability of both men’s lives.
This is not a conventional feel-good friendship movie. The story uses Craig’s social insecurity and desire for connection to explore male loneliness, modern masculinity, status anxiety, and the discomfort of trying to make close friends as an adult. Its comedy gradually pushes into darker, more unsettling, and surreal territory as Craig’s fixation escalates.

Cast and creative team
- Tim Robinson as Craig
- Paul Rudd as Austin
- Kate Mara
- Jack Dylan Grazer
- Andrew DeYoung, writer and director
Robinson’s lead role is a major draw for viewers familiar with his recognizable cringe-comedy style, while Rudd plays against the expectations attached to his more accessible mainstream-comedy roles. The pairing gives the film its central tension: Craig’s anxious need for connection collides with Austin’s confidence, charisma, and seemingly effortless social world.
How dark is Friendship?
Friendship is rated R for language and some drug content. It runs for approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. Although it is marketed as a comedy, its tone is better described as an A24 dark comedy that moves toward psychological discomfort, horror, and surrealism.

It may appeal to viewers who enjoy uncomfortable character comedy, stories about social alienation, or films that turn an ordinary relationship problem into something increasingly extreme. It is not a family-friendly comedy or a straightforward story about two neighbors becoming best friends.

Yes. If you prefer to own the film rather than depend on a streaming catalog, A24 also released Friendship Blu-ray. Is Friendship worth watching?
It is a strong option for viewers looking for an unconventional Paul Rudd comedy, a showcase for Tim Robinson’s awkward-comedy persona, or a darker film about the difficulty of adult friendship. The premise starts with a familiar social problem—wanting to connect with someone who seems more confident and interesting—but examines it through obsession rather than sentimentality.
Set expectations correctly: Friendship is an R-rated, uneasy comedy about loneliness and emotional instability. Its appeal lies less in reassuring friendship lessons than in watching a well-intentioned need for connection become unhealthy and destabilizing.
