Her account is more complicated than the familiar story of a “muse”: she remembers the joy, but also speaks for herself about strain, loss and the songs that became attached to her life.
How Boyd’s relationships with Harrison and Clapton began
Meeting George Harrison
Boyd met Harrison in 1964 while working on the Beatles film A Hard Day’s Night. She initially turned down his invitation because she already had a boyfriend, then accepted after seeing him again. They married in January 1966. Boyd’s account of their early story is recounted in CBS News’ 2007 interview and its 2022 interview.

Clapton’s declaration
Clapton told Boyd he was in love with her while she was still married to Harrison. Boyd said she initially went home with Harrison and stayed with him for several more years before leaving. That sequence matters: the well-known triangle was not, in her telling, an immediate switch from one marriage to the other.
Why Boyd left Harrison
Boyd has described the marriage as coming under strain after the Beatles’ period in India, amid tension and changes in Harrison’s behavior. She says she left him in 1974. That is the date of her departure, not the formal end of the marriage: The Standard lists their marriage as lasting from 1966 to 1977.
#1 Best Overall
Looking back, Boyd has not reduced the experience to either romance or regret. In a 2022 CBS interview, she said, “I feel that I had the most wonderful and fabulous experience being married to the two unreservedly talented geniuses, really.” In 2007, speaking about the painful parts of the story, she said, “The whole episode is incredibly painful.”
What Boyd has said about her marriage to Clapton
The Standard gives Boyd and Clapton’s marriage as 1979–1989. In her 2007 account, Boyd described serious difficulties, including Clapton’s heavy drinking and learning that he had a child with another woman. These are her recollections, not a claim that every part of their relationship can be understood from the public story around it.
Rank #2
Boyd’s account also places the relationship in a broader context than a famous declaration of love. Clapton’s feelings, the years she remained with Harrison, and the later pressures she described all belong to the story. Treating the marriage only as an extension of a song’s mythology leaves out what Boyd says about living through it.
Were “Something,” “Layla” and “Wonderful Tonight” about Boyd?
These songs are often grouped with Boyd’s relationships, but they do not all have the same kind of connection—and lyrics alone cannot establish what happened between people.

- “Something”: The Harrison song is commonly associated with Boyd in accounts of their marriage. The available interviews do not make the song a complete record of their relationship.
- “Layla”: Boyd said the song drew on a love story and that Clapton’s feelings for her at the time were somewhat unrequited. Her account cautions against turning the song into proof of a simple or mutual romance.
- “Wonderful Tonight”: Boyd said she understood how the song came about because she was present while Clapton wrote it.
Boyd’s own remarks on the songs and relationships appear in CBS News’ 2022 interview.
Boyd’s memoir and later books
Boyd’s memoir, Wonderful Tonight: George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Me, presents her first-person account of the relationships and the public stories that grew around them. ABC News identifies it as her memoir, and CBS News’ 2007 feature describes the book as her version of the story: ABC News and CBS News.
Rank #4
Her later book, My Life in Pictures, also foregrounds her photography alongside her personal history. That dimension matters: Boyd’s story is not only about being connected to two famous musicians, but also about her own creative work.

In 2024, Boyd opened an archive of photographs, clothes, letters and other personal items for a Christie’s sale. The Standard reported that she found the letters affecting; Boyd said, “The letters are quite revealing.” The sale is a past event, not evidence that the items are still available. The Standard’s 2024 account and AP’s report describe the auction context.
