In 2024, Scialfa disclosed that she had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2018, a condition she said made touring more challenging.
Who is Patti Scialfa?
Born in Monmouth County, New Jersey, Scialfa studied jazz, composition, music theory and voice at the Frost School of Music in Miami before earning a degree from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study. She is known to many listeners as a member of the E Street Band, but she had already been writing and performing her own music before joining it. Springsteen’s official band biography traces her early career from New York clubs to collaborations with regional and touring musicians.
In New York, Scialfa formed a band to play her original songs at venues including Folk City, Trax, Tramps, Kenny’s Castaways and the Bitter End. She also formed the trio Trickster with Soozie Tyrell and Lisa Lowell. Her early work included performances or collaborations with Don Cherry, Narada Michael Walden, David Sancious’s band Tone, David Johansen and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.
How did Patti Scialfa join the E Street Band?
In June 1984, Springsteen asked Scialfa to join the E Street Band for the Born in the U.S.A. Tour. The band biography lists her contributions as vocals and guitar. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s account of the E Street Band places her among the musicians who have toured with the group across its long history; the E Street Band was inducted into the Hall in 2014.

At the time of the documentary, Scialfa said she sometimes joined a show or two and sang a few songs onstage, adding that this was her “new normal” then. That statement describes her situation as presented in 2024; it should not be read as a current performance schedule. No further details about treatment or prognosis are established here.
