Patrick Schwarzenegger plays Saxon Ratliff, the eldest son of a wealthy American family vacationing in Thailand in season three of The White Lotus. The actor is the son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, but his account of preparing for the role shows how he worked to make Saxon’s privilege visible on screen rather than relying on his own family name.
Who does Patrick Schwarzenegger play in The White Lotus?
Schwarzenegger portrays Saxon Ratliff, the eldest child of the Ratliff family. In the show’s third season, Saxon travels to Thailand with his parents and siblings. He is a fictional character, and the Ratliffs’ wealth and behavior belong to the series’ satirical story—not to Schwarzenegger’s real family.
Season three is set in Thailand. TIME reported that Four Seasons Koh Samui was a primary filming location and that production also took place in Phuket. Those are real locations used in filming; they should not be confused with a fictional resort setting or treated as a recommendation to book a stay. TIME’s report on the Thailand production also describes the show’s satire of affluent Western travelers encountering cultures from which they can remain detached.
How did he shape Saxon’s performance?
In a Men’s Health interview, Schwarzenegger said creator and director Mike White pushed him to make Saxon’s wealth legible through his physical presence. White’s direction, as Schwarzenegger recalled it, was: “Walk richer! You don’t look rich enough! Be more rich! Rich, rich, rich!”

The note focused on how Saxon moves, not simply what he says. Schwarzenegger described taking the instruction into his walk and posture so the character’s confidence and privilege would register in a scene. It is a specific piece of character work: the performance signals Saxon’s place in the Ratliff family before the audience needs an explanation of his status. Read the Men’s Health interview.
Is Patrick Schwarzenegger Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son?
Yes. Patrick Schwarzenegger is the son of actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and journalist Maria Shriver. That family connection is part of the public context around his casting, but it does not make Saxon autobiographical: Saxon is a fictional wealthy eldest son, while Patrick’s real-life family background is separate from the Ratliffs’ story.
