Partners is a 2025 documentary about Buffalo Starbucks baristas’ unionizing effort, directed and edited by Chris Sessions. Its official synopsis says the film uses footage from workers and organizers to tell the story of the campaign; the film page describes the company’s response as an “elaborate, illegal anti-union attack.” That is the film’s framing, not a substitute for distinguishing the claims and outcomes recorded in later labor proceedings.
What Partners is about
The Center for Social and Economic Justice’s official film page credits Chris Sessions as director and editor, and Sessions and Hillary Demmon as producers. Its synopsis centers on Buffalo baristas announcing their intention to unionize and presents footage from workers and organizers. The film’s title refers to Starbucks’ term for its employees.
The film page’s forceful characterization of an anti-union attack belongs to the documentary’s account. To understand the campaign’s public record, it helps to separate the film’s narration and workers’ accounts from union announcements and the National Labor Relations Board’s procedural record.

How the Buffalo campaign unfolded
The first election result
Starbucks Workers United dates the organizing movement’s start to Buffalo in 2021 and identifies the Elmwood store as the first to win its union. Workers United announced on December 9, 2021, that the NLRB had counted ballots for three Buffalo stores that day. Elmwood had won; the results for two other stores remained pending contested counts when the announcement was issued.

Workers United later reported that the NLRB confirmed the union’s certification as bargaining representative for Elmwood. That is a distinct milestone from the election-day announcement: the first reported the vote result, while the later statement concerned certification.
Michelle Eisen, whom Workers United identified as a barista and an 11-year partner at Elmwood, called the result “a historic moment in time.”

Later labor proceedings
In June 2022, the NLRB’s Buffalo office said a regional director had petitioned for Section 10(j) injunctive relief concerning seven former employees. The agency release describes allegations made in that petition. A petition is not itself a final ruling that those allegations were proved.
A later NLRB regional release described an administrative law judge decision that included remedies for seven workers and other relief: reinstatement and compensation, reopening a facility, bargaining, union access, training, and notices. Those are the remedies described by that agency release. The cited page does not establish the later appeal or enforcement status, so it should not be read as a complete account of what happened after the decision.

A separate Buffalo case record
An NLRB representation case page records a December 3, 2024, certification of representative in a Starbucks Buffalo case involving Workers United. The date and location alone are not enough to identify it with Elmwood’s 2021 election. The case record is a separate entry and should not be conflated with that first-store vote.
