Parasyte: The Grey is Netflix’s six-episode Korean science-fiction horror series, premiered on April 5, 2024. It uses Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Parasyte manga as its starting point but tells a new story in Korea with new characters. The central figure, Su-in, survives an attack by an organism that fails to take over her brain, leaving the two to coexist while a human task force called Team Grey fights parasites living in human hosts.
What is Parasyte: The Grey about?
Unidentified parasites descend on humanity, seize human bodies and use those hosts to gain power. Su-in is attacked but does not undergo a complete takeover. Instead, she remains herself while sharing her body with the parasite, creating a precarious existence between human and organism.

That situation intersects with Team Grey, an organized group trying to eliminate parasites that live off humans. The premise supplies both the series’ horror and its main question: can beings that normally treat one another as enemies find a way to coexist?
This is a spoiler-light orientation rather than an episode recap. Netflix’s individual episode summaries reveal later developments, so the overview here stays with the setup.

Who is in the cast?
Netflix identifies three principal leads and two additional principal cast members:
- Jeon So-nee as Su-in, the survivor whose failed parasite takeover leaves her in an unusual state of coexistence.
- Koo Kyo-hwan as Kang-woo, who is searching for his missing sister.
- Lee Jung-hyun as Jun-kyung, the leader of Team Grey.
- Kwon Hae-hyo in a principal cast role.
- Kim In-kwon in a principal cast role.
Su-in’s bodily and psychological predicament is the link between the personal story and Team Grey’s wider campaign.

Is Parasyte: The Grey based on the manga?
Yes, but it is not a direct retelling. The source is Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Parasyte manga, published by Kodansha. The Netflix series relocates the premise to Korea and follows fresh characters in a new narrative. It extends the manga’s imagined world rather than reproducing its original plot.

Netflix’s February 2024 announcement said the manga had sold over 25 million copies in more than 30 regions and countries. That is a figure reported by Netflix in 2024, not a newly audited worldwide total.
Iwaaki welcomed the approach, saying he felt the creators “greatly respected the original work” while also seeing “unique creative branches and ideas” that he enjoyed as both the original author and an audience member. Readers who want the source material should look for Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Parasyte manga; edition, translation and availability vary by territory.

What does the series say about coexistence?
Coexistence is the adaptation’s organizing theme. Director Yeon Sang-ho explained: “To me, ‘Parasyte’ is about coexistence, so I wanted Parasyte: The Grey to echo this theme. I questioned whether people could peacefully coexist with other organisms or mutants unlike themselves.”
Su-in embodies that question more directly than any policy or battle plan. She is neither a standard parasite host nor an ordinary human untouched by the invasion. Her position forces the series to examine identity, mutual dependence and the possibility that survival may require cooperation with something regarded as alien.
A line assigned to Heidi, the parasite, makes the practical version of the idea explicit: “We would both be dead if we weren’t together. You and I have no choice but to coexist.” It is character dialogue, not a statement from a real-world commentator.

How were the parasite effects created?
Yeon has described a production approach that treated the parasites as forces acting on the whole environment, not merely as computer-generated shapes added to a shot. He said the crew considered how hair should move naturally when a parasite’s head moved and even experimented with pulling objects using strings. He also physically demonstrated movement for actors so they could visualize transformations and action that would later be completed with effects.
Yeon summarized the challenge as “continuously filming things we couldn’t see as if we could.” That emphasis on physical reaction helps the unseen organism feel present before viewers see its full form.
How should manga readers approach the adaptation?
If you want the original story
Choose Iwaaki’s manga. It is the foundational work and follows its own characters and plot.
If you want a new entry in the same world
Choose the Netflix series. Its Korean setting, new cast of characters and six-episode structure make it an independent story that draws on the manga’s concepts without requiring a scene-by-scene comparison.
If you are deciding by tone and format
Netflix categorizes the show as Korean science fiction, action-adventure and horror. The compact six-episode season favors a serialized television experience rather than the long-form progression of a manga series. Neither format is established as universally “better”; they offer different stories and ways into the same premise.
