It premiered on Netflix on April 5, 2024, with a six-episode first season. Its central character, Jeong Su-in, survives a parasite attack and ends up sharing her body with the organism; meanwhile, a government task force called Team Grey fights the spread of parasites.
Is Parasyte: The Grey based on the manga?
Yes. Netflix describes the series as inspired by Iwaaki’s Parasyte manga and set in the same universe. The connection is the premise and world of parasites living among humans—not a direct adaptation of the manga’s existing plot. Netflix Tudum identifies Shinichi Izumi and the parasite Migi as the manga’s central pair, while the series follows new characters, including Jeong Su-in and the parasite she calls Heidi. Netflix Tudum’s series guide and Netflix’s premiere announcement describe the series as a new story in a different location.
That approach follows the manga’s core idea while giving the screen story its own cast and conflicts. Director Yeon Sang-ho described the manga to Tudum as being about “coexistence.” He also characterized the genre as “body snatcher.” The title’s “Grey,” Yeon explained via Tudum, “could mean the mixture of these two different kinds of agents.”
How does the series differ from the manga?
| Aspect | Parasyte: The Grey | Iwaaki’s manga |
|---|---|---|
| Story and characters | A new story centered on Jeong Su-in, her parasite Heidi, and Team Grey. | Centers on Shinichi Izumi and his parasite, Migi. (Netflix Tudum) |
| Setting | South Korea, in the fictional city of Namil. | Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan. (Netflix Tudum) |
| Format | Live-action Netflix series. | Manga by Hitoshi Iwaaki. |
The shift in country is more than a change of scenery: it lets the adaptation introduce a new social and institutional response to the parasites, embodied by Team Grey. The series keeps the manga’s unsettling question of how humans and parasites might coexist, but explores it through Su-in’s situation rather than Shinichi and Migi’s.

What is the story about?
Su-in survives an attack by a parasite, but the organism does not take full control of her as it does with other victims. She and the parasite coexist, creating an uneasy bond at the center of the story. As parasites threaten people, Team Grey—a government task force—works to identify and combat them. Netflix’s official description and Tudum’s guide establish these central roles; the premise places Su-in between the task force’s effort to contain the threat and the parasite living alongside her.

Where can you read the original manga?
Readers who want the source work can look for Hitoshi Iwaaki’s original Parasyte manga, published by Kodansha. It is the work that inspired the series, not a show tie-in or a volume of the Su-in storyline. Edition, language, and current availability depend on the retailer and region. Netflix’s 2024 premiere announcement described the manga as having sold or circulated more than 25 million copies in over 30 regions and countries; that is Netflix’s dated figure, not an independently audited current total. Netflix’s announcement includes the figure and Iwaaki’s comment that the “new story” in a different location could lead audiences into a world beyond his imagination.
