Police were investigating the circumstances of his death. At the time, the Associated Press reported that police had not said whether they had determined that Lee died by suicide; Yonhap described it as an apparent suicide while noting the circumstances remained under investigation. Lee had been questioned in an inquiry into suspected drug use, but the reports cited here do not establish a conviction or prove the allegations.
What happened to Lee Sun-kyun?
Yonhap News Agency reported that Lee was found dead in a car near Waryong Park on December 27, 2023. Police were investigating when and how he died. The Associated Press reported that police initially declined to say whether they had determined that Lee had killed himself. Yonhap characterized the death as an apparent suicide, while also reporting that police were investigating the precise circumstances. These accounts do not support presenting suicide as a confirmed police determination.
Lee’s agency, HODU&U Entertainment, said it was heartbroken and asked the public to refrain from speculation or false information about him, according to Yonhap. Unconfirmed rumors circulated after his death, as the Associated Press noted; they are not established facts and are not needed to understand the reported investigation.
What was the drug investigation about?
The reports described suspicions and allegations, not a proven offense. Yonhap reported that police began an internal investigation involving Lee and seven other people over alleged drug use. On October 20, 2023, Lee had not officially been named a suspect in that report. His agency said it would cooperate with the inquiry and that Lee had filed a blackmail complaint.

Lee’s account and reported test results
Yonhap later reported that police booked Lee as a suspect in late October. Lee reportedly said he had been tricked by a hostess and did not know what he was taking. Yonhap also reported that he tested negative in both a brief preliminary reagent test and a National Forensic Service laboratory test. Those reported results are part of the public account of the case; on their own, they do not settle every question about the broader investigation.
At his first questioning on October 28, Lee said, “I am sorry for my family, who are enduring extreme pain at this moment,” Yonhap reported. The remark was made as he appeared for questioning, not as a finding about the allegations.

When was Lee questioned, and what happened at his final appearance?
Yonhap reported that Lee appeared for police questioning three times. His final appearance was on December 23, four days before his death, and the questioning session lasted 19 hours, according to Yonhap.
In a December 28 follow-up, Yonhap reported that Lee had asked through his lawyer for his final police appearance not to be open to the press, but police rejected the request. In comments reported by Yonhap, Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency chief Kim Hui-jung said, “It’s correct that bringing people behind closed doors conforms to the principles,” and said police had not first released Lee’s questioning schedule. Police officials defended their handling of the investigation and said they would review practices if warranted. The reporting describes a dispute over press access; it does not establish that the investigation or the press arrangements caused Lee’s death.
