Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford first knew each other as children at church camp, then reconnected as adults before becoming a couple. They were publicly linked in early 2011, engaged that August and married in Somerset on 21 April 2012. They now have three children, though public accounts do not establish the youngest child’s name or birth date.
How did Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford meet?
A childhood friendship at church camp
Mumford told the Los Angeles Times that he and Mulligan met at church camp when they were 12. He recalled that they enjoyed one another’s company, wrote letters and stayed in touch outside camp. He did not give a calendar year for that meeting.
Reconnecting as adults
Reflecting on how their relationship developed, Mumford said, “When we got together, I think we recognized in each other the kind of person that we’d been, that we’d so enjoyed as kids that we’d written letters to each other and stayed in touch outside of camp.” His account describes a later reunion but does not specify when or how it happened.
Us Weekly’s retrospective timeline says they were publicly linked in early 2011, citing sightings at a Nashville show and an Arcade Fire concert. Those reports establish when they attracted public attention, not a precise date for the start of their romance. CBS reported that the engagement followed five months of dating, but that duration is a contemporary report rather than a dating timeline confirmed in Mumford’s account.
