The catastrophe reshapes the United States in the show’s story, while a hidden settlement in a Colorado mountain becomes a refuge. The Television Academy describes the town as a project engineered by tech billionaire Samantha Redmond amid a climate catastrophe. Its feature gives the settlement a fictional population of 25,000 and describes its artificial sky.
How does the nuclear threat fit in?
The eruption and its immediate effects are not the only danger. The story introduces the threat of nuclear escalation, but Cal Bradford does not choose to launch nuclear weapons. Instead, he selects an EMP-related option that disables them, as the episode presents it, leaving people outside the refuge a chance to survive.

- Runtime: 440 minutes
James Marsden, who plays Cal, told TV Insider: “The blue codes are just allowing them to have an opportunity to survive, and outside of that, you’re playing god.” His comment explains the character’s choice; it is not technical evidence about real-world weapons or an EMP system.
How to understand the event’s stages
- Initiating event: An Antarctic supervolcano erupts.
- Immediate consequences: A huge tsunami and devastating earthquakes spread the disaster’s effects.
- Escalation: The catastrophe is compounded by the threat of nuclear war.
- Cal’s intervention: He uses the EMP-related option to disable the nuclear weapons rather than launch them.
These are connected beats in the series’ fictional chain of events, not competing explanations for a real disaster. The scale—including the 300-foot tsunami and the settlement’s 25,000 residents—is part of the show’s story.

What the show establishes—and what it doesn’t
Paradise is a Hulu series created by Dan Fogelman, according to the Television Academy. Its disaster scenario is presented through entertainment coverage and an actor’s discussion of a character’s motivations, not scientific validation. The sources describing the plot do not establish that this eruption-to-tsunami scenario, or its depicted scale, is a real-world prediction.
