In “A Holy Charge,” Annie gives birth, then dies after a medical emergency. Her final request leaves Xavier caring for her newborn and searching for the child’s father—adding an urgent responsibility to his ongoing search for Teri.
What happens in “A Holy Charge”?
Annie goes into labor while Xavier and members of the surrounding community rally to help her through the birth. The baby survives, but Annie suffers a medical emergency after delivery and does not make it. TVLine’s episode recap and TheWrap’s interview about the episode describe the birth and its devastating aftermath.
Before she dies, Annie asks Xavier to find the baby’s father. The request turns Xavier’s journey into more than a search: he now has an infant to protect, along with a promise to fulfill.
How Annie’s last request changes Xavier’s journey
Xavier’s larger goal remains finding Teri. Hulu’s official series description frames his search as taking place outside the bunker. Annie’s request does not replace that mission; it gives him an immediate, deeply personal duty to carry alongside it.

That shift is the episode’s emotional hinge. Xavier is pulled into a new family responsibility at the very moment he is trying to reunite with his own. The baby’s father is now another person Xavier must seek, though the cited episode coverage does not establish what he will discover next.
Why the birth carries extra weight
The episode also includes flashbacks involving an earlier birth in the bunker. Set beside Annie’s labor, those scenes create a thematic echo between births separated by time and circumstance. The available coverage establishes the parallel, but not enough detail to treat the flashbacks as a full account of the earlier sequence.

The title, “A Holy Charge,” can be read as a reference to the responsibility Annie places in Xavier’s hands. That is an interpretation of the episode’s framing, not a confirmed explanation of its religious symbolism.
What Shailene Woodley said about the performance
In a March 3, 2026 interview with TheWrap, Shailene Woodley, who plays Annie, described working with Sterling K. Brown this way: “We were animals with each other.” She was discussing the actors’ performance, not quoting dialogue from the episode. Read the full interview.
