The Associated Press reported that San Antonio police were dispatched to a home in the city’s south side at about 7 p.m. on June 1, 2025. Officers found Joss wounded near the street and attempted life-saving measures. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead. He was 59.

In a statement reported by the AP, the San Antonio Police Department said: “The officers attempted life saving measures until EMS arrived. EMS pronounced the victim deceased.” The AP’s June 2 report described the police response and confirmed Joss’s death.
What Joss’s husband alleged
Joss’s husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, confirmed his death to the AP and alleged that the shooter yelled violent homophobic slurs. That is his account of what happened; the AP report did not establish the alleged slurs as an independent police finding.

Why the motive remains unresolved
Police initially said their investigation had found no evidence that the killing was related to Joss’s sexual orientation. On June 5, Police Chief William McManus called that statement “premature” and said whether Joss’s sexual orientation played a role “is part of the investigation.” The chief’s correction meant the initial statement should not be treated as a final finding. The sources cited here do not establish a definitive hate-crime determination.

Arrest, charge and reported court status
Police arrested Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez and charged him with murder, the AP reported. A later AP report said a grand jury indicted him on a murder charge in November 2025. An arrest, charge or indictment is an accusation, not a conviction.
A San Antonio Report result later said the trial was reset after attorneys told a judge they were still reviewing discovery. The sources cited here do not confirm what happened after that reset, so they do not establish the case’s current court status.

John Redcorn on King of the Hill
Joss was widely known for voicing John Redcorn on the animated comedy King of the Hill. The show’s revival, which included work Joss had completed, premiered in August 2025, according to the AP’s November report.
