He was also the man who tried to assassinate Cal years earlier, before Paradise was built. His motive was revenge for the excavation crew he had tried to protect from dangerous working conditions—not Cal’s later investigation into Sinatra.
Who killed President Cal Bradford?
The finale reveals that the librarian is the killer. He infiltrated Paradise under a stolen identity and remained hidden in the community for years. After Cal visited the library, the librarian broke into Cal’s home and bludgeoned him.
The library visit was the immediate trigger, but the deeper motive went back to the construction of Paradise. The librarian had tried to protect workers from hazardous conditions during the bunker excavation; their suffering and deaths became the grievance that drove his attack.
Why did the librarian want Cal dead?
The excavation crew’s exposure
Twelve years before the present-day events, the future librarian managed a crew excavating the mountain site for the underground community. He learned that blasting residue was toxic and tried to alert the project’s leadership. Instead, he was pushed out, while workers continued in unsafe conditions and became ill.

From whistleblowing to an assassination attempt
After trying to expose the danger, he became radicalized and attempted to assassinate Cal during a White House press briefing. He shot Xavier instead. After serving time in prison and escaping during the catastrophe, he used stolen identities to enter Paradise, changed his appearance, and took on the role of the community’s librarian.
His eventual murder of Cal was the culmination of that long-running grievance. It was not a direct response to Cal investigating Sinatra or learning about survivors on the surface.

What does the ending mean for Xavier?
Xavier had blamed Cal for the loss of his life with Teri. By the finale, he has reason to see Cal differently: Cal left clues, or “breadcrumbs,” that help Xavier conclude Teri may still be alive. Xavier feels genuine remorse as he understands more of Cal’s actions.
That conclusion remains a reason to search, not proof that Teri survived. Sterling K. Brown, who plays Xavier and is an executive producer, cautioned in a post-finale TVLine interview that “Sinatra is not a trusted narrator.” Xavier needs information beyond Sinatra’s account before he can treat Teri’s survival as certain. The finale does not reveal whether Teri is alive or what Xavier will find on the surface.

Where do the other characters end up?
- Xavier: He prepares a plane and leaves to search for Teri.
- Robinson: He stays behind to care for Xavier’s children.
- Sinatra: Jane shoots her. She survives but is unable to communicate.
- Jane: She is still alive and is last seen playing Cal’s Wii.
