Spoilers for the Season 2 finale of Pachinko. In “Chapter Sixteen,” Noa discovers that Koh Hansu is his biological father and leaves, while Sunja ends her relationship with Kato after learning more about his wartime past. The finale’s question—whether the family is “out of the woods”—hangs over both storylines: moments of safety do not mean hardship is over.
“Chapter Sixteen” is Season 2, Episode 8, and Apple identifies it as the season finale. The episode was dated October 11, 2024, on Apple TV Press’s official episode-images page (Apple TV Press). Its two timelines reach different turning points: Noa faces a family truth Sunja had kept from him, and 1989 Sunja must decide what to do with what she has learned about Kato.

What does Noa discover?
Noa learns that Koh Hansu is his biological father. Sunja had tried to keep this truth from him; once it is revealed, Noa leaves. Apple’s episode synopsis describes Noa uncovering a devastating truth, while TV Guide identifies the secret and TVLine reports his departure (Apple TV; TV Guide; TVLine).
The revelation reshapes Noa’s understanding of his family and of the identity he has been given. His departure makes the discovery an immediate rupture, not simply a secret finally explained. The finale does not resolve what that separation will mean for Noa or his family.

What does Sunja decide about Kato?
In the 1989 storyline, Sunja learns more about Kato’s wartime past. The preceding episode described his involvement in a massacre of American POWs; the finale brings Sunja’s concern into a coffee-shop conversation with him. She gently severs ties with Kato, choosing not to continue the relationship in light of what she has learned (Collider; TVLine).
Why does Mozasu confront Yoshii?
Mozasu confronts Yoshii and tells him to stay out of his son’s life, according to TVLine. The scene connects to an earlier point in the timeline: in 1951, young Mozasu first meets Yoshii at the pachinko parlor where he works. That link gives the 1989 conflict a longer history, rather than presenting Yoshii as a sudden complication (TVLine).
What does “Are we out of the woods?” mean?
Sunja asks Kyunghee, “Do you actually believe we are out of the woods?”—a line reproduced in Collider’s recap (Collider). In context, the question expresses the season’s resilience theme: surviving one crisis or finding a period of relative security does not guarantee that the hardship is finished. That is an interpretation of the scene, not a statement attributed to the show’s creators.

The episode brings emotional clarity to several choices but leaves their consequences open. Noa’s departure is a painful separation, Sunja has ended things with Kato, and Mozasu has drawn a boundary with Yoshii. The finale does not show what Noa’s choice will mean for the family afterward.

Pachinko is a television adaptation based on Min Jin Lee’s novel, but the novel and series should be treated as distinct works rather than assumed to share every adaptation choice (Apple TV Press).
