Who is Alfie Whiteman?
Whiteman joined Tottenham’s academy at age 10 and spent about 16 years with the club. He made one senior first-team appearance, replacing Joe Hart against Ludogorets in the Europa League on 5 November 2020. He also represented England at youth level and played on loan for Swedish club Degerfors, making 34 Allsvenskan appearances, according to ESPN.
His senior appearance record is distinct from his place in Tottenham’s 2024–25 Europa League-winning squad. Whiteman was on the bench for the final and received a winner’s medal; he did not play in the final. The BBC and ESPN report those details.
Why did he leave professional football?
Tottenham’s contract with Whiteman expired in summer 2025. He had opportunities to continue playing, including trials with Championship and League One clubs, but decided to focus on creative work instead. In a BBC Sport interview published 29 April 2026, he said, “I knew I didn’t want to be in football when I was done.” He described a period of unhappiness and a desire to try something different while still young.

The change was not an overnight decision. During his football career, Whiteman pursued photography, took acting lessons and sought experience and contacts on creative sets. He told the BBC he was learning so that “when that day came I wasn’t at zero.” His loan spell in Sweden also became material for A Loan, an exhibition built around photographs and diary entries from that period.
What is he doing now?
Whiteman’s work now includes directing and photography. Tottenham’s 8 September 2026 profile credits him as director and photographer of the short film Tottenham ’Til I Die, about Spurs supporters and their community. In that interview, he said he was doing “a lot of directing as well as photography” and working on scripts and other projects. He also described wanting to develop long-form narrative work and documentary photography.

ESPN reported in October 2025 that Whiteman had joined production company Somesuch. The available accounts establish the direction of his new career, but do not provide a complete list of his current projects or a detailed filmography.
