Then verify FFmpeg maps that stream and encodes it in a format supported by the YouTube ingestion protocol you use. A missing track, silent source, incorrect mapping, disabled audio, and unavailable device input need different fixes; without your command, media probe, protocol, and YouTube warning, no single cause can be confirmed.
Start by checking whether the source has audio
Before changing your output settings, inspect the input file. Run:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.extReplace input.ext with your filename. In the output, look for a stream identified as audio, such as an AAC or MP3 stream. FFmpeg also prints an input-stream summary when it opens a file.
- No audio stream is listed: The file may be video-only, or the audio may be in a different source. Changing the output codec cannot recover audio that is not present.
- An audio stream is listed, but the broadcast is silent: The track could itself be silent, or FFmpeg could be selecting the wrong stream, disabling audio, or failing to encode it as intended. Listen to the source or extract a short sample to distinguish a silent track from an output problem.

Check FFmpeg stream mapping and audio options
When an input has multiple streams, explicitly mapping the intended video and audio makes the selection visible. For an input with a video stream and a desired audio stream, a starting pattern is:
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?The ? makes the audio mapping optional: FFmpeg can continue if the input has no audio. It does not create an audio track. Adapt the stream indexes to your actual input. Also check that the command does not contain -an, which disables audio, and that an output audio codec is set. Review options applied later in the command as well; output-specific settings can change the result.
For a file that already has audio and a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS destination, this illustrative output template shows explicit mapping and AAC encoding:

-f flv 'rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY'This is a starting template, not a tested command or a guarantee for every FFmpeg build, input, or stream-key configuration. Use the endpoint and output format appropriate to your YouTube setup. Replace STREAM_KEY privately; do not post a real key in a forum or support request. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingestion. Its live encoder settings guidance describes the supported settings.
Match audio settings to the YouTube ingestion protocol
RTMP or RTMPS stereo
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists AAC and MP3 for audio. For stereo, it recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate. AAC is a practical first test when correcting a silent FFmpeg output. These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular input or command will work.
RTMP 5.1 surround
For 5.1 audio over RTMP, YouTube says to use AAC and recommends 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Do not apply those 5.1 settings to an ordinary stereo stream. YouTube also warns that channel layouts other than mono, stereo, or 5.1 may convert unreliably to stereo. See its 5.1 streaming guidance.

HLS
HLS has a separate set of requirements; do not assume an RTMP/RTMPS output fragment is suitable. YouTube Help lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 for HLS audio. Its HLS guidance also specifies transport-stream segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and other packaging details. If the video is intentionally silent
If the source is supposed to have no sound but your workflow requires an audio stream, FFmpeg can generate silence with an anullsrc input. One illustrative input pattern is:

-map 1:a:0 -c:a aac -ar 44100 -b:a 128kInput numbers depend on the full command. Check that your installed FFmpeg build has the required filter, and test the complete output. This produces silence; it cannot restore speech or music missing from the source.

Device capture is a separate problem from streaming audio already inside a file. First check whether Linux exposes an audio device:
cat /proc/asound/cards
cat /proc/asound/devicesFFmpeg’s device documentation describes ALSA input identifiers such as hw:CARD[,DEV[,SUBDEV]]. PulseAudio capture depends on FFmpeg being built with the required support and on access to the appropriate server.

OVHcloud’s KVM documentation describes remote keyboard, video, and mouse access. It does not establish that a VPS has a physical microphone or audio-capture device. If your stream needs live microphone audio, you must make an audio source available to the server; changing an ALSA device name does not create one.
Test the stream and use YouTube’s health messages
Before a scheduled broadcast, test a representative stream and check for audio in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Use the stream-health warnings alongside FFmpeg’s log output to narrow down whether the problem is source audio, mapping, encoding, or delivery.
