How Much Does Cloud Transcoding Cost for a 4K 60fps YouTube Live Loop?

A one-input, one-output H.264 UHD cloud-encoding estimate is $2.35 per active hour on Google Cloud’s us-central1 rate card. Learn what that excludes and how managed looping differs.

For a self-managed cloud encoder, Google Cloud’s published us-central1 rates work out to $2.35 per active hour for one H.264 UHD input and one H.264 UHD output—about $1,692 for 720 hours. That is an encoding-resource estimate, not a complete quote for a particular workflow. A managed loop-hosting service uses a different pricing model, while delivery costs for viewers outside YouTube are a separate matter.

First decide what “cloud transcoding” includes

A 4K60 YouTube Live loop can describe different workflows, and their costs are not interchangeable:

  • Cloud encoding to YouTube: a cloud service processes a source and sends a live feed to YouTube. The estimate below covers specified encoding resources.
  • Managed cloud playout: a service loops uploaded recordings or a playlist and broadcasts to YouTube for a subscription fee. Compare the actual plan and its limits rather than treating it as an hourly encoder rate.
  • Viewer delivery outside YouTube: if you also serve the audience through your own streaming stack, packaging, origin and CDN transfer can add substantial costs. Do not include those charges in a YouTube-only ingest estimate.

YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple formats for viewers. That viewer-side processing is distinct from the creator’s cloud encoding. A single 4K output to YouTube therefore does not automatically mean you need to generate a full ladder of renditions yourself. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance explains its playback transcoding and ingest recommendations.

Google Cloud: a one-input, one-output estimate

Google’s Live Stream API pricing page lists us-central1 hourly rates of $0.85 for one H.264 UHD input and $1.50 for one H.264 UHD output. Adding those rates gives $2.35 per active hour. At 720 active hours—the arithmetic for a continuously active 30-day month—the estimate is $1,692 before any additional outputs, endpoints, captions, storage, egress, taxes or other services. These are calculations from Google’s rate card, not an independent market average or a quote for a complete customer bill. See Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing for current rates and conditions.

Configuration (us-central1) Listed input rate Listed output rate Combined hourly estimate 720-hour arithmetic
One H.264 UHD input and one H.264 UHD output $0.85/hour $1.50/hour $2.35/hour $1,692
One H.265 UHD input and one H.265 UHD output $0.42/hour $3.00/hour $3.42/hour $2,462.40

The H.265 pair is a separate rate-card calculation, not a claim that it is cheaper overall: the listed UHD output rate is higher than H.264’s. Confirm the codec and applicable rate for the workflow you intend to run.

What changes the bill

  • Active time: Google bills active channel resources even when no input is arriving. Its pricing page states a 10-minute minimum, then rounds up to the nearest minute.
  • Additional outputs: every extra rendition or output resource can add charges. Google’s illustrative us-central1 example with two UHD H.264 inputs and seven mixed H.264/HEVC outputs totals $8.89/hour. That is a configuration-specific example, not the cost of a single-output loop.
  • Distribution resources: Google lists a $0.75/hour distribution endpoint fee; distribution streams are billed as additional outputs. Include these only if your architecture uses them.
  • Captions and translations: the page lists $0.75 per minute per unique generated text output language. If generated continuously, this could outweigh ordinary encoding charges; do not include it unless you use that feature.
  • Other billable services: storage, transfer, taxes and workflow components may affect a real bill. The listed rate pair alone does not establish their cost.

Google’s pricing page does not state a free usage tier for this service.

AWS rates are a different configuration, not a direct comparison

AWS says MediaLive charges depend on selected inputs, outputs and add-ons, including codec, bitrate, resolution and frame rate. Its published example for a standard channel in US East (N. Virginia) totals $21.791/hour and uses two UHD inputs, standard redundancy and six outputs, including one UHD HEVC output at 30fps. It is not an apples-to-apples price for a single 4K60 input and output. AWS also says a running channel can incur charges without input or output activity, and data transfer may add costs depending on how content leaves AWS. Qualifying usage can have reserved pricing with a 12-month commitment; AWS publishes savings of up to 75% versus on-demand for applicable resources. Check AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing for the relevant configuration and region.

A separate AWS live-streaming architecture example shows why encoding and audience delivery must be budgeted separately: its US East (N. Virginia) estimate for a one-hour 1080p event with about 10,000 viewers is approximately $13.04 for encoding and packaging plus $1,492.56 for 18,017 GB of distribution, or $1,505.60 total. This is AWS’s illustrative scenario, not a 4K60 estimate and not a YouTube-only ingest price. The AWS live-streaming deployment guide describes that example.

Use YouTube’s current 2160p60 ingest guidance

YouTube’s current general recommended ingest bitrates for 2160p60 are 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 50 Mbps for H.264. Use the recommendation that matches your codec and encoder settings, and confirm current guidance in YouTube Help. These are ingest recommendations, not a promise that every cloud provider charges the same amount at those rates.

AWS published a 2021 technical example sending 3840×2160 HEVC at 59.94fps and 20 Mbps to YouTube HLS ingest. It demonstrates a documented technical path, but it is older than YouTube’s current general bitrate guidance and should not be treated as a current recommended setting or a price quote. See AWS’s 4K/HDR YouTube workflow example.

Estimate your own monthly cloud-encoding cost

  1. Choose the provider and region. Use that region’s rate card, not a figure from another region.
  2. List every billable input and output. Record codec, resolution and frame-rate tier for each. Add each rendition separately; do not price a multi-output ladder as one UHD output.
  3. Count active hours. For a 30-day always-on month, use 720 hours. Check minimum-duration and rounding rules, and whether an idle but active channel still bills.
  4. Add applicable hourly resources. Include endpoints, packaging or other add-ons only when your design uses them.
  5. Keep audience delivery separate. Add transfer or CDN costs only if your architecture serves viewers outside YouTube; estimate those using audience, bitrate, geography and cache behavior.
  6. For a subscription service, inspect the actual plan. Confirm that 4K60 is included, along with broadcast-hour limits, storage and playlist limits, destinations, restart or monitoring behavior, overages and cancellation terms.

A useful first-pass formula is (hourly input charges + hourly output charges + hourly add-ons) × active hours + separate distribution or transfer charges. Provider prices change, so verify the rate card and region before committing to a budget.

Choose the workflow that fits the loop

Self-managed cloud encoder

This gives you control over the cloud workflow, but you must select and operate the resources, account for active-time billing, and check every input, output and add-on. It makes sense when you need that level of control or have a broader cloud-video architecture.

Managed loop hosting

A managed service may bundle playlist playout and cloud broadcasting under a subscription rather than charging separately for encoder resources. Streamloop advertises 24/7 cloud playlist broadcasting, support up to 4K/60fps and a $4/month entry price, but its product page does not establish that the entry tier includes 4K60. Verify the precise plan and inclusions before comparing its starting price with a 4K60 configuration.

Local encoding

If your recording is already encoded and you are comfortable keeping a computer, encoder and internet connection running, local streaming may avoid cloud encoding charges. The trade-off is that the equipment and connection must remain available for the loop; this option is not a cloud-hosted playout service.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded YouTube loop, StreamNeo is a managed cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera or stream to other platforms. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. The uploaded video is sent as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery and StreamNeo team support. The same product is included on every plan; billing duration changes. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. You can also choose daily, weekly, six-month or yearly billing and cancel any time. See StreamNeo for plan details. Start the free first day at StreamNeo registration.
