For a VPS that relays an already-encoded YouTube feed, compare the exact plan’s advertised port speed with your stream bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. OVHcloud advertises plan-specific public bandwidth up to 3 Gbps and a 99.9% SLA; Contabo documents port speeds from 200 Mbps to 1 Gbps for Core and Performance VPS plans, with unlimited traffic subject to fair-use terms. Those are provider-published claims, not proof of sustained throughput or an uninterrupted stream. For the simplest way to keep uploaded videos live on YouTube without operating a server, try StreamNeo first: it runs in the cloud, supports uploads as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

OVHcloud VPS vs Contabo for YouTube streaming: the practical difference

Neither provider can be declared universally better for an always-on YouTube stream from advertised bandwidth alone. Your choice depends on the stream’s bitrate, the server’s route to YouTube’s ingest, the VPS region and plan, and whether the VPS relays an encoded feed or must encode video itself.

Decision point OVHcloud VPS Contabo VPS What it means for a stream
Advertised public port speed Plan-specific; the current VPS page lists examples from 500 Mbps to 3 Gbps. Contabo documentation lists 200–1,000 Mbps for Core and 500–1,000 Mbps for Performance plans. Compare the specific plan’s advertised rate with the combined outbound bitrate you need. A port ceiling is not a guarantee of sustained end-to-end throughput.
Traffic terms Unlimited traffic is advertised on the VPS page. “Unlimited” traffic has no default cap, but fair-use terms apply and exceptionally high or disruptive usage may be throttled. Do not equate unlimited traffic with an unlimited-rate commitment; read the current plan and policy terms.
Compute and storage Plan resources vary; the product page advertises NVMe on the new range and daily backups. Core plans use shared vCPUs and SSD; Performance plans use shared vCPUs on newer AMD EPYC generations and PCIe Gen 4 NVMe. For relaying an encoded feed, network and process stability matter. Software encoding/rendering adds compute demands that advertised vCPU specifications alone do not settle.
Continuity features The VPS page advertises a 99.9% SLA, monitoring, daily backups, and automatic DDoS mitigation. Documentation describes network-level DDoS protection; snapshots vary by plan, and Auto Backup is an add-on for Core and Performance plans. These are features and service terms, not evidence that a particular stream configuration will never stop. Backups protect data or configuration; they do not keep a feed on air by themselves.
Locations Choose an available datacentre or local zone based on the route to YouTube ingest and your needs. Documented locations include Europe, the UK, the US, Singapore, Japan, India, and Australia; confirm availability at checkout. Choose based on actual route quality and operational needs, not the provider name alone.
Price and plan terms Current starting prices and configurations vary by market. Effective monthly rates may be tied to a 24-month subscription, and tax treatment varies by market. Compare checkout totals, renewal terms, region, and backup add-ons for your country rather than relying on a headline starting price.

Is a Contabo VPS fast enough to stream to YouTube?

It can be sufficient on advertised port speed for many single-stream bitrate targets, but that does not establish real-world sustained egress or route stability. Use the plan’s listed port rate as a screening check, not as a performance guarantee, and leave the headroom YouTube recommends.

Start with the codec and target bitrate

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations differ by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its current H.264 guidance includes 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, 42 Mbps for 4K at 30 fps, and 50 Mbps for 4K at 60 fps. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of a VPS. The official table also specifies different recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply H.264 figures to another codec. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

Allow network headroom and count backup feeds

YouTube recommends 20% network headroom. As a simple planning example, a single H.264 1080p60 stream at the recommended 17 Mbps calls for at least 20.4 Mbps of outbound capacity after adding that headroom. If you send a primary and backup stream simultaneously, include both bitrates in the outbound requirement before adding headroom; YouTube says their combined bitrate should fit available outbound bandwidth. YouTube also advises testing outbound capacity, since download speed can be higher than upload speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

What “unlimited traffic” does—and does not—tell you

Traffic allowances describe data use under a provider’s terms; they do not tell you the route’s moment-to-moment quality or guarantee the stream’s bitrate can be sustained. OVHcloud advertises unlimited traffic alongside plan-specific bandwidth. Contabo describes unlimited traffic with fair-use conditions and possible throttling in exceptional or disruptive cases. Check the exact plan and policy in your market, and arrange a controlled test if stable sustained egress is critical.

Choose by the workload and risk you need to manage, not by “unlimited” wording alone. The provider pages do not establish comparative measured uptime or streaming performance for a particular configuration.

Choose OVHcloud when its plan and terms fit

  • You need a plan whose advertised public bandwidth, region, and resources match your bitrate with headroom.
  • The advertised 99.9% SLA, monitoring, daily backups, and DDoS mitigation fit your operational requirements; check the SLA’s scope and exclusions in the current terms.
  • You have checked the selected configuration and total cost for your market rather than assuming one starting price applies everywhere.

Choose Contabo when its plan and terms fit

  • The specific Core or Performance plan’s documented port speed is sufficient for your target and any backup feed, with headroom.
  • You understand the fair-use qualification on unlimited traffic and the possible throttling described for exceptional or disruptive usage.
  • You have accounted for the chosen region, plan-specific snapshot options, and any Auto Backup add-on you require.

In either case, distinguish relaying from encoding

A VPS relaying an already-encoded feed has a different CPU profile from one rendering or encoding video in software. Contabo documents shared vCPU resources, and vCPU counts alone do not establish software-encoding performance. Validate CPU and memory under your intended workload before relying on a VPS to encode continuously.

How to choose and validate a VPS for an always-on stream

  1. Specify the stream. Record resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, and whether a redundant feed will run at the same time. Use the matching codec row in YouTube’s encoder settings, not a bitrate figure for a different format.
  2. Calculate outbound capacity. Add primary and backup bitrates if both run, then include YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Treat that as a planning target, not proof the selected VPS can sustain it.
  3. Check the exact plan and location. Verify its advertised port speed, regional availability, traffic policy, renewal term, and full checkout cost. For a critical stream, ask the provider about sustained egress or test the intended route and configuration.
  4. Match compute to the job. Decide whether the VPS only relays an encoded feed or must encode/render it. If it encodes, test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, and content; do not infer performance from a shared-vCPU count.
  5. Plan recovery separately from backup. Review SLA scope, monitoring, snapshots or backups, and how you will restart the streaming process if it exits or the instance fails. Backups can restore files and settings, but they do not automatically resume an interrupted live feed.
  6. Run a representative test. Test the real content, including motion and audio, and monitor YouTube’s stream health during the run. Verify that your restart/recovery behavior works and keep the stream key secure.
  7. Recheck commercial terms before committing. Prices, taxes, discounts, renewal terms, regions, and optional backup costs vary by market and can change. Confirm the checkout total and terms for your country on the provider’s current site.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • YouTube reports an unstable stream despite a high advertised port speed: a port ceiling does not establish sustained throughput or route quality. Measure outbound capacity, check the route and stream health, and reduce the target bitrate if the connection cannot maintain it.
  • The VPS appears fast in a download test but the live feed drops: download speed is not upload capacity. Test outbound egress specifically and retain the recommended headroom.
  • A backup feed causes congestion: count primary and backup bitrates together before comparing against outbound capacity; keep their combined rate within the available capacity with headroom.
  • The stream stops after the encoding process fails: configure and test process restart/recovery behavior, then verify that YouTube accepts the resumed feed. Provider monitoring or backups do not necessarily restart the encoder.
  • Software encoding overloads the VPS: the VPS is doing more than relaying. Test the chosen encoder settings on the actual workload and move to suitable compute or encode the feed elsewhere if it cannot sustain them.
  • Traffic is throttled or the plan is unsuitable: review the provider’s current traffic policy and exact plan terms; for Contabo, account for the fair-use qualification and discretionary throttling described in its policy.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

A continuously running server does not make a stream’s content eligible to remain live. Use only footage, music, narration, and other material you have rights to use, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and channel monetization rules before scheduling a long loop. Repeating content is not itself a substitute for permission, and a VPS provider’s network or backup features do not resolve rights claims. For a pre-publish review, use this copyright safety checklist.
